Photoelectric Sensors: A Critical UL 325 Safety Requirement

Since the introduction of ANSI/CAN/UL 325 in Canada, commercial automatic door and gate systems have been required to provide enhanced entrapment protection. For most automatically operated commercial overhead doors, that means properly installed and functioning photoelectric sensors or another approved monitored external entrapment protection device.

Photo eyes do more than stop a door from closing on an obstruction—they help protect people, equipment, and vehicles while ensuring your operator functions as designed. If a monitored photo eye system fails, many UL 325-compliant operators will restrict operation to constant-pressure-to-close until the fault is corrected.
