Good learning space decisions begin before products are selected.

Students, educators, families, and community members each understand different parts of what a space needs to make possible. Bringing those perspectives into the design process early helps leaders define priorities, identify needs, and build alignment around the intended learning outcomes.

As Ashanti Bryant explains, moving too quickly to solutions can mean missing what matters most to the people who will live with those decisions.

We support design conversations between students, educators, and their communities, turning what is shared into thoughtful, practical learning environments.

The spaces where young learners learn, play, and grow deserve thoughtful attention. Every choice, from the way a room flows to the materials within it, can shape how a child experiences their day.

Our new Early Years Design Guidebrings those choices together. Created for educators, directors, and program leads, it offers ideas for creating quality learning environments that feel welcoming, purposeful, and ready to support the rhythms of Early Years programs.

Inside, you'll find guidance on room layouts, materials, furnishings, and the small details that can help a child feel safe, curious, capable, and at home. It’s a starting point for thinking through the choices that shape your space, from the way learners move through it to the way educators use it throughout the day.

“Why don't we design the day together?”

Verena Gibbs, educational coach and former principal of Tahayghen Elementary, shares what can happen when learning responds to the learners in the room.

Sometimes a topic truly resonates. You planned a week for it, but the energy says it could carry learning for much longer.

The learning environment either gives that curiosity room to grow, or works against it.

Flexible usually means things can be moved.

But a classroom is really flexible when a piece can be used in more than one way, and every child in it knows that's allowed.

To feel content in a space, we have to feel some control over it. That shows up in a bench becoming a workspace, then somewhere to sit alone. In a shelf low and sturdy enough that it's also considered a workplace for floor-level learning. In a child asking to try something and an adult saying yes, then helping.

Sometimes agency needs a hand. That's still agency.

Furniture can limit the extension of agency. Pieces built for one job teach everyone in the room there's only one right way to use them.

If September has arrived faster than expected, take a breath. Inventory is available, and there's still time to make meaningful changes to your learning space.

We work through that with schools in a free design consultation, while the answers still cost nothing to change.

Bright plastic chairs? Check. Tiny metal tables? Yep. Rainbow walls? You bet.

It’s a lot.

According to Dr. Kathryn Murray, the founder of Brain-Set, that much sensory input can actually keep kids from learning.

Curious how Texture, Shape, Size, Color, and Furniture impacts your classroom? And how you can design a learning space that intentionally creates calm?

"I was the person that had the bright bulletin boards and six different seating arrangements that I would change up weekly."

That was Suzy Potts, Director of Education at Creekside Creative Academy, describing the version of herself who thought excitement was something you decorated onto a room.

Walk into her learning environment now and there's almost no bright color anywhere. Everything is neutral, home-like, and calm.

Suzy worked with our team to create the beautiful and inspiring space her educators and children enjoy every day.

"It has that regulation piece to the kids so that they can focus on what they're learning."

The kids settle a lot faster.

Educators often tell us that they can immediately feel the difference in their classroom.

They tell us the room got quieter. That the children settle faster. That there's more space to move and less to tidy at the end of the day.

The space is doing work in the background, and it shows up in how the day feels.

One space at a time.

Children can tell when a room was made for them. They may not have the words for it, but they feel it.

That's what intentional design does. At Westchester Torah Academy's Early Learning Center, every decision started with the children and educators who'd use the Reggio Emilia inspired space, not a school furniture catalog.

"This space feels warm, welcoming," is how Deganit Ronen, WTA's Head of School, describes that first moment coming downstairs. The teachers say it changed the way they teach.

You belong here, go ahead, explore.

This is what the learning environment at St. Geneviève Catholic School says to its learners, and it didn’t happen by accident.

With 19 years of experience, Principal Laurie Day had a clear philosophy about what learning environments should do.

She understood, from practice rather than theory, that the physical space is a pedagogical tool — that furniture shapes behavior, that materials carry meaning, and that children respond to the sensory quality of the rooms they inhabit.

Curious what this level of intention looks like? St. Geneviève Catholic School is an excellent case study the types of decisions that go into human-cenetered learning space design.
