If you want to work in the U.S., don’t start by choosing a visa. Start with the job.
Your job offer determines which pathways are actually available to you. The role, duties, salary and employer structure all matter before you can decide what comes next.
For some Canadians, that may be a professional category under CUSMA. Others may qualify through an intercompany transfer, while entrepreneurs may have an investment-based option.
Once the route is clear, the file needs to be built around that category’s specific requirements. A strong resume won’t help if your education, job duties, corporate relationship or supporting documents don’t line up with what the category requires.
For many Canadians, the decision can happen at the port of entry, which makes preparation especially important. One officer may have only minutes to assess the file in front of them.
And if U.S. permanent residence is your long-term goal, that belongs in the strategy from the beginning. The temporary route you choose now can affect the options available later.

Shipping your belongings to Canada too early can lead to customs delays and storage fees.
Many people spend months preparing their work permit, business immigration plan or relocation strategy, then realise too late that their household goods also need to be timed properly.

Receiving a positive LMIA does not mean an employer’s responsibilities are finished. Service Canada can inspect employers to confirm that the wages, job duties, working conditions and records still match what was approved.
