Temporary Foreign Workers - Southern Alberta

Last Saturday, the Sepak Takraw Championship brought together eight teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia for a day of competition and community in Medicine Hat.

Organized by CCIS's Temporary Foreign Worker team in Medicine Hat, the event brought together many Temporary Foreign Workers from Medicine Hat and Redcliff, along with players and spectators from Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, and beyond. Congratulations to the Medicine Hat team, who took home the championship title!

The tournament was a great opportunity for workers to connect through a sport that is popular in many Southeast Asian countries while also sharing their culture with the broader community. It was encouraging to see local residents come out to support and enjoy the event.

Tomorrow marks Emancipation Day in Canada. ⛓️‍💥

Observed annually on August 1, Emancipation Day commemorates the day the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire in 1834, marking a significant moment in history and recognizing the history and legacy of slavery in Canada.

This day offers an opportunity to learn about the experiences of Black Canadians, reflect on the lasting impacts of slavery, and recognize the many contributions Black communities have made and continue to make to our country.

At CCIS, we join communities across Canada in recognizing this important day and celebrating the diversity that strengthens our society.

Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning for large parts of Alberta, with temperatures climbing to 30°C and above.

At CCIS, we care about the wellbeing of our community. Please take steps to stay safe and look out for one another:

☀️ Heat Safety Tips:
• Schedule outdoor activities during cooler morning or evening hours
• Rest in air-conditioned, shaded, or cool indoor spaces
• Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a hat to protect yourself from the sun
• Apply sunscreen and use insect repellent when spending time outdoors
• Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles
• Check in on seniors, children, and vulnerable neighbours

🚨 Know the signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke: Dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, lack of sweat, fainting, or unconsciousness.

We were pleased to welcome The Honourable Evelyn Vera Barreto, Consul General of Mexico for Alberta and Saskatchewan, to CCIS yesterday for a meaningful discussion on the services and supports available to newcomers and temporary foreign workers across Alberta

Accompanied by Deputy Consul Sebastián A. Galván Duque, the Consul General met with our CEO, Gordana Radan; Hasmik Asmaryan, Director of our Business, Employment and Training Services (BETS); Ricardo Morales, Director of our Community Development and Integration Services & Southern Alberta Rural Settlement Projects; and Bamidele Salako, Manager of our Marketing & Communications department.

The discussion focused on CCIS services for newcomers, supports for temporary foreign workers (TFWs), and opportunities for collaboration to further strengthen resources and pathways to success for Mexican newcomers building their futures in Canada.

We thank The Honourable Evelyn Vera Barreto and the Consulado de México en Calgary/ Consulate of Mexico in Calgary for their visit and look forward to continued collaboration in support of thriving, welcoming communities.
