𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐞 (PDS) is an 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 material that gradually breaks down in the body, making it ideal for internal suturing where removal is not feasible.

Nylon, silk, and cotton are all 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 sutures meaning that the strength can last up to several months, and in some cases (like stainless steel), even years! These types of sutures generally need to be removed after a select period of time.

Just a quick reminder about sutures and their size – sutures vary in size based on the UPS scale, from 11-0 (smallest) to 7 (largest). This might sound confusing, but in medicine, we actually would pronounce 11-0 as 11-ought, meaning that the size is 11 zeros (so really really small!), and goes all the way up to size 7. So, what would you think is a bigger size? 2-0 or 2? The answer is 2! Great job!

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 also contribute to energy production, particularly during high-intensity activities, but they are not essential in the diets of dogs and cats as fats and proteins can meet their glucose needs.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐬 are vital for growth, maintenance, and repair of tissues. While they can be used for energy, their primary role is to support structural and functional components of the body, such as muscles, enzymes, and hormones.

𝐕𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐬 are essential for metabolic processes and overall health, but they do not provide energy. Instead, they act as catalysts in energy production and other vital biochemical reactions.
