SCRAP ADAP! ✊

We delivered a letter to MLA Peter Singh’s office outlining our concerns about the Alberta Disability Assistance Program and the impact it will have on people with disabilities.

Peter Singh apparently wasn’t in the office, but staff accepted our letter and committed to setting up a meeting with us next week to discuss our concerns.

We’re looking forward to that conversation—but we’ll keep organizing until people with disabilities have the support they deserve.

City centre chapter meeting happening NOW at the central library! Room 3-10A!

🏠 Calgary Renters need City Council to start treating the housing crisis with the urgency it requires.

Yesterday, Calgary ACORN went to City Hall to speak at the committee hearing on the City’s Housing Strategy Refresh — and we left deeply disappointed.

Tenants and tenant organizations were not consulted on the housing strategy refresh. And what we saw was a strategy focused only on supply, with targets that aren’t high enough to meet the scale of the crisis — and no guarantee that Council will actually fund those inadequate targets.

If we aren’t building enough non market housing, then we need to protect the affordable housing we already have.

That means landlord licensing.

Calgary needs a system that ensures rental housing is safe, maintained and livable — and that holds landlords accountable when they fail tenants. That includes Calgary Housing. Public or private, landlords should not be allowed to let affordable housing fall into disrepair or treat tenants badly without accountability.

Ultimately, this comes down to the City budget.

📢 We need to make our voices heard at City Hall this November.

We need the City of Calgary to:
🏠 Fund housing at the level of the actual need.
🏠 Protect the affordable housing we already have through landlord licensing.
🏠 Hold landlords — including Calgary Housing — accountable.

This November, ACORN is going to City Hall to make sure Council hears us.

The Federal government is currently developing a NEW National Housing Strategy🏠. This is a real opportunity for Canada to reverse course on many of the issues plaguing renters who are bearing the brunt of the housing crisis.

Yet consultations on the new NHS are being done in secret and behind closed doors 🚪🔒.

Every Minister in the Liberal Cabinet is a homeowner and 38% are landlords. How can we expect the federal government to represent tenants’ interests if we’re not consulted? 🤔

Horrific landlord issues: infestations, harassment, threats, broken appliances and NOTHING being done.
Landlords, Alberta Public Health, RTDRS are all completely inadequate to address the issues.
Not to mention the issues, incompetence, and abuse tenants face once they are lucky enough to get services with Calgary Housing.
