Thinking about trying acupuncture but not sure what to expect?
You might be wondering about the needles, whether it hurts, what to wear, how long youโll be there, or what youโll feel like afterward.
Here are five things that are helpful to know before your first appointment.
If youโre picturing the needle used for a blood draw, acupuncture needles are quite different.
Theyโre very fine, flexible, sterile, and single-use. Your practitioner chooses where to place them based on your individual assessment and treatment plan.
If needles make you nervous, let your practitioner know. They can talk you through what to expect before getting started.
Probably the most common question before a first appointment.
Acupuncture generally involves little to no pain, but you may notice some sensation. Warmth, pressure, tingling, or a dull ache around the needle can all happen.
Once the needles are in place, many patients find the treatment quite relaxing. Some even fall asleep.
Nothing special. Just come comfortable.
Loose clothing can be helpful since your practitioner may need access to different areas of the body depending on your treatment.
Your first visit also includes time to go through your health history and goals, so come with any questions youโve been wanting to ask.
The needles typically stay in place for about **15 to 40 minutes**, depending on your treatment.
Once theyโre placed, thereโs really nothing you need to do. You can get comfortable, relax, and yes, falling asleep is completely fine.
Your first acupuncture consultation and treatment at TLL is booked for **75 minutes**, which also gives your practitioner time to learn about your health and goals before treatment.
Once the treatment is finished, the needles come out and you can continue with your day.
Before you leave, your practitioner may check in about how the treatment felt and talk about what comes next.
There isnโt a
Feeling tired, wired, anxious, foggy, burnt out, or waking up in the middle of the night?
Cortisol often gets blamed for symptoms like these, but one hormone rarely tells the whole story.
As Dr. Sarah Kent, ND explains, chronic stress can absolutely affect how we feel. But understanding why someone is feeling off means looking at the context around those symptoms.
Even mental load matters. A schedule that looks manageable on paper can feel very different to a nervous system that rarely gets a chance to switch off.
Stress can influence sleep, blood sugar regulation, digestion, recovery, inflammation, and hormonal signalling. Thatโs why looking at a collection of symptoms and immediately calling it a โcortisol problemโ can miss important pieces of the picture.
The goal isnโt to make you afraid of stress or convince you that every symptom means something is wrong with your hormones.
Itโs to understand the patterns, ask better questions, and figure out what your body may actually need.
Stress matters. Context matters more.

Breathing happens automatically, but every breath involves coordinated movement of the diaphragm, rib cage, and trunk.
Your breathing mechanics can therefore tell us something about how these areas are moving together.
The diaphragm is the primary muscle of inspiration. When it contracts, it changes pressure within the trunk and helps draw air into the lungs while influencing movement of the lower rib cage.
It doesnโt work alone. The intercostal and other respiratory muscles help coordinate movement of the chest wall with each breath.

For an osteopathic therapist, observing how the diaphragm, rib cage, and trunk move together can provide useful information about movement and mobility.
This can be considered alongside your ๐๐๐บ๐ฝ๐๐ผ๐บ๐, ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐, ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ, ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ณ๐๐ป๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ด๐ผ๐ฎ๐น๐ during an assessment.
Your breathing mechanics can be relevant to how your body moves - particularly through the rib cage and trunk.
A Osteopathic Manual Therapist can assess these movement patterns alongside your history, symptoms, and physical function to determine what may be contributing to the way you move and where treatment may be helpful.

If an area keeps feeling tight, the instinct is often to stretch it more.
But tightness doesnโt always mean you need more flexibility.
The sensation itself doesnโt necessarily tell us whatโs contributing to it.
Feeling stiff and actually having stiff tissue arenโt necessarily the same thing.
Our perception of tightness can be influenced by more than tissue flexibility alone.
Thatโs why simply stretching more doesnโt always address the reason it keeps coming back.
Instead of focusing only on where you feel tight, look at the pattern.
When does it show up? What activities affect it? Does movement change it? Has anything changed in your training, work, or daily routine?
The context can provide important clues.
Massage can be one tool for managing certain types of muscular tension and musculoskeletal discomfort.
But the goal isnโt simply to โloosenโ a muscle.
Massage therapy considers what youโre experiencing and how the tissues respond, rather than assuming every tight muscle needs the same treatment.
Still stretching the same spot?
A Registered Massage Therapist can look at when the tension returns, what seems to trigger it, and how it relates to your movement and activity.
From there, they can determine whether massage therapy may be an appropriate part of your care.

PCOS/PMOS goes beyond โjust lose weight.โ
For many patients, weight loss has been the focus in managing their PCOS/PMOS. But this is only one piece of a much broader hormonal and metabolic picture.
PCOS has also recently been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMOS, reflecting a growing understanding of its endocrine, metabolic, and ovarian features.
In this reel, Dr. Caitlin Batting, ND, explains why looking beyond weight can help create a more complete conversation about PCOS/PMOS and individual health concerns.

A medication review with our Nurse Practitioner can help you better understand what youโre taking, identify potential side effects or interactions, and determine whether monitoring or changes should be considered.
Your medications should be reviewed as your health and needs change over time.
Never stop or adjust a medication without guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.

Therapy-speak is making relationships colder. But the words themselves are not the problem.
Terms like boundaries, gaslighting, and triggered can give us language for experiences that were once difficult to explain.
The problem starts when the label becomes the entire conversation.
โI need a boundaryโ tells someone less than:
โIโm feeling overwhelmed and need some space tonight.โ
โYouโre gaslighting meโ can shut a conversation down, while:
โI remember that differently. Can we talk through what happened?โ creates room for dialogue.
Clinical language can help us understand ourselves, but relationships still require context, curiosity, and real communication.
As Registered Provisional Psychologist Manoah explains, the goal is not to sound clinically perfect. It is to communicate like a real person.

GLP-1 conversations often focus on one number: body weight.
But when appetite and food intake decrease, nutrition quality, protein intake, strength, movement, GI tolerance and overall health matter too.
And an important distinction: lean mass is not the same as muscle mass. Thatโs why the conversation should be about more than simply what the scale says.
For patients using a prescribed GLP-1, naturopathic care can help support nutrition, lifestyle and relevant health considerations alongside the broader healthcare team.
The scale is useful information. It just isnโt the whole story.

Do you really need a gallon of water a day?
Not necessarily.
A gallon is about 3.8 L. For context, general daily water intake guidelines are about 2.7 L for women and 3.7 L for men, and that includes water from food and all beverages, not just plain water.
Your body regulates hydration through thirst, hormones, and your kidneys, so more water is not always better. Drinking excessive amounts too quickly can also dilute sodium levels in the blood, leading to hyponatremia.
Hydration needs vary based on exercise, heat, sweat loss, diet, and individual health needs.
The takeaway: hydration matters, but a gallon a day is not a universal goal.

Pain tells us where something hurts, but it may not tell us the whole story.
When assessing discomfort, an Osteopathic Manual Therapist may look beyond the painful area to understand how surrounding joints, muscles, and tissues are moving and functioning.
For example, with knee discomfort, an assessment may also consider hip mobility, ankle movement, previous injuries, and how you stand or walk.
The painful spot still matters. Itโs simply one part of a broader assessment that may include your health history, posture, mobility, and movement patterns.
The goal is to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and create an individualized treatment plan based on your assessment findings.
Save this post as a reminder: the painful spot may be where the assessment begins, not where it ends.
