The other day, I shared with a group of pastors a short hand list of lessons learned from our journey of starting a new church.

#1. It's the turtle who won.
You will often overestimate what you can do in 1 year, and underestimate you can do in 10. Be patient. Be steady. Be faithful. Don't ever forget it's the tortoise who won, not the hare.

#2. People often feel like they are not enough, so encourage them as often as you can!
Truett Cathy said it best, “How do you know if someone needs encouragement? If they are breathing.”
Encouragement Takes 3 Forms:
1. “Keep doing that” - Positive Affirmation
2. “Thank you for doing” - Appreciation
3. “You can do this” - Belief in others

#3. Trust people by their actions, not their words.
People will say a lot, but what they do is much more revealing of who they are.

#4. Leadership development is discipleship.
If someone isn't coachable, then they do not have a hunger to grow. Healthy leaders want to grow. Unhealthy leaders want to be right.

#5. What you think is necessary to be impressive, is not what is impressive to other people.

People care more about the authenticity of a leader, than how cool things look. Never forget that God is the one who does the heavy lifting in people's lives.

We are “rebels” with a calling!
