🎲 Math Tip: Probability Must Stay Between 0 and 1

Probability tells us how likely an event is to happen.

It can be written as a:

βœ… Fraction
βœ… Decimal
βœ… Percentage

Remember:

Impossible event = 0
Certain event = 1

For example, a standard die has 6 possible outcomes.

The probability of rolling a 4 is:

1/6 β‰ˆ 0.167 β‰ˆ 16.7%

If your probability is greater than 1 or greater than 100%, something has gone wrong and it is time to check your work.

A simple way to remember it:

0 means impossible.
1 means certain.
Everything else falls somewhere in between.

βž— Math Tip: Check the Denominator First

Fractions become much easier when students understand what the denominator actually represents.

The denominator tells us the size of each piece.

So before adding or subtracting fractions, ask:

Are the denominators the same?

If they are the same, you can combine the numerators directly.

For example:

1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4

But if the denominators are different, like:

1/3 + 1/4

you need to find a common denominator first.

That is because thirds and fourths are different sized pieces, so they cannot be combined directly.

A simple fraction checklist:

βœ… Check the denominators
βœ… If they match, combine the numerators
βœ… If they do not match, find a common denominator
βœ… Simplify the final answer if needed

βž• Math Tip: Think About Direction With Integers

Positive and negative numbers become easier to understand when students connect them to everyday situations.

🌑️ Temperature
Moving from βˆ’8Β°C to +3Β°C shows movement from below zero to above zero.

πŸ’° Money
Owing $20 can be represented as βˆ’20.

🏒 Elevation
A floor below ground level can be represented with a negative number.

When multiplying or dividing integers, remember:

βœ… Same signs give a positive answer
βœ… Different signs give a negative answer

Instead of memorizing the rules alone, encourage your child to think about what the positive and negative signs represent.

Integers are an important part of Alberta junior high Math and appear again in algebra, graphing, temperature changes and real life problem solving.

Save this carousel for revision and try creating your own integer example at home.

βž— Math Tip: Estimate Before You Calculate

Before solving a problem, encourage your child to make a quick estimate of what the answer should be.

Example:

49 Γ— 21

Round 49 to 50 and 21 to 20.

50 Γ— 20 = 1,000

The exact answer is 1,029, which is close to the estimate. This tells us the answer is reasonable.

Estimating helps students catch mistakes, improve their number sense, and feel more confident when solving problems.

Try this practice question:

72 Γ— 19

First estimate the answer, then calculate the exact result and compare both answers.

✍️ Language Arts Fun Fact

Every complete sentence needs a verb.

A verb tells us what someone or something is doing, or describes a state of being.

For example:

❌ The happy dog.

This is not a complete sentence because it does not tell us what the dog is doing.

βœ… The happy dog ran across the park.

The verb β€œran” completes the sentence and helps the reader understand what happened.

Encourage your child to look for the verb whenever they write or check a sentence. This simple habit can improve grammar and make writing clearer.

πŸ’‘ Challenge:

Can your child write one sentence using three different verbs?

At LearnEasy Academy, we help students improve their grammar, reading, and writing through personalized online tutoring.

🌳 Science Fun Fact

Trees may not have voices, but they can still interact beneath the ground.

Their roots can connect with networks of tiny fungi called mycorrhizal fungi. Through these networks, trees may exchange nutrients, support nearby plants, and respond to changes in their environment.

Older trees can also help younger trees by sharing resources such as water and nutrients.

The next time your child visits a park, encourage them to look at the trees and imagine the hidden network beneath their feet.

Science helps children understand that nature is more connected than it first appears.

At LearnEasy Academy, we help students explore Science through clear explanations and examples from everyday life.

One piece of parenting advice I always share is this:

Start early.

Whatever skill you hope your child becomes confident in, give them the opportunity to begin as early as they can. It isn't about putting pressure on them. It's about giving them time to learn, explore, and grow at their own pace.

For our family, that skill is technology.

We introduced coding to our children at a young age, and today it's amazing to see how much they've grown.

Our oldest enjoys creating games, editing videos, and exploring new technology. One fun rule we introduced at home was that everyone could only play games she had built herself. That simple challenge motivated her to keep creating and improving.

Our hope isn't just that our children learn to code.

It's that they grow up seeing technology as a tool to solve problems, think creatively, and build solutions wherever life takes them.

What skill would you love your child to develop early in life?

Let us know in the comments. We'd love to hear from you. πŸ’›
