The Bank of Canada confirmed today that it's holding the overnight policy rate steady at 2.25 per cent, with the Bank Rate at 2.5 per cent and the deposit rate at 2.20 per cent.
This pause reflects continued strength in the Canadian economy, which grew 3.3 per cent in Q2. Consumer spending, housing activity, exports and business investment all picked up, and unemployment ticked down to 6.4 per cent in July.
For buyers and sellers, the steady rate offers some breathing room as the housing market adjusts to a stronger economic backdrop. That said, inflation is still on the Bank's radar, with rising energy costs and new US tariffs adding a layer of uncertainty.
Governor Tiff Macklem and the Governing Council noted the Bank is balancing support for growth with keeping inflation in check, and will keep evaluating whether the recovery holds. The next rate decision lands October 28, 2026.
