Today, we observe the International Day of Peace. It's a day that has only grown more important as the world becomes more volatile and war zones have multiplied. This year's theme is "Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day," and in the spirit of that theme we feel it is crucially important to celebrate the people in our communities who lay the groundwork for peace by standing up for social justice, equality, and workers' rights. Our members have spoken clearly. Safeway members want a fair agreement that allows them to support their families and recognizes the value of the work they do every day. They want to be able to afford the food they stock on the shelves, to work in safe stores and to know they have job security moving forward. They don’t want to strike, they want to be at work serving their customers. But Sobeys needs to understand what is at stake.

This result confirms what members have been telling us for the past year - they are tired of delay tactics at the bargaining table and are prepared to walk the picket line if Safeway cannot table a fair deal.
