Oil slowly wears out, and it should be replaced.
When we do an oil change on a woodwind instrument we dissasemble the full instrument, clean it, and inspect it as it is reassembled. This is a multisite process and can take multiple hours to do it well. It is important to do and does make a difference both to the feel of the instrument and the lifespan of the instrument.
