Many Albertans have been impacted by the recent BG Wealth Sharing scam and its associated fraudulent trading platform, DSJ Exchange, also known as DSJ EX.
Promoted through social media and messaging apps, investors in this international scheme were promised unrealistic returns, including claims that they could rapidly double their money.
A key part of how this scheme spread was the sense of community it created. Through online groups and constant messaging, BG Wealth Sharing made investors feel connected and part of something legitimate. Early withdrawals and “success stories” built trust, encouraging people to share the opportunity with friends, family and their broader communities.
As the BG Wealth Sharing scam began to collapse, many investors found they could no longer withdraw their funds and were instead asked to pay additional “taxes” or “fees”, one of the clearest red flags of an investment scam.
Following the scam, the ASC saw an increase in the number of people being targeted and promised that they can get their BG Wealth Sharing funds recovered, if they pay an upfront fee. This isn’t true.
Often funds are not recoverable, and those working to stop further harm do not charge taxes or fees. Follow-up or recovery room scams exploit people when they are already vulnerable and can cause even more financial and emotional harm.
Recently, the ASC issued several cease-and-desist letters to promoters linked to BG Wealth Sharing. We continue to work with securities regulators and other law enforcement entities in Canada and the U.S. with an aim to stop further harm to the public.
