Calgary Cinematheque
Bringing people together to foster a critical cinema culture. We are Calgary’s year-round champion of challenging and under-represented global cinema.
Curated screenings of artistically significant, historically relevant, and newly rediscovered films in Mohkinstsis. Our eclectic programming features selected films that expand Calgary’s movie-going options to include benchmark retrospectives, classic restorations, masterworks, and acclaimed screen rarities. We curate programs constructed around thematic links, historical or current movements, and the work of individual artists. Our programming includes overlooked contemporary world cinema, discussion sessions with guest speakers, and community events. We frequently collaborate with other organizations including the University of Calgary, Calgary Underground Film Festival, containR, and Theatre Junction. As a local hub for cinema as an art form, Calgary Cinematheque has a dedicated member base and 800+ subscribers ranging from passionate cinephiles to the simply curious and adventurous among the filmgoing public. We offer Calgarians the chance to experience significant cinema in its full grandeur: on the big screen surrounded by an audience of film lovers. We build community around the enjoyment of cinema art in a shared theatrical experience.
--------------------------
Film is more than the twentieth-century art. It's another part of the twentieth-century mind. It's the world seen from inside. We've come to a certain point in the history of film. If a thing can be filmed, the film is implied in the thing itself. This is where we are. The twentieth century is on film. You have to ask yourself if there's anything about us more important than the fact that we're constantly on film, constantly watching ourselves.

Up Next...The Last Laugh ✨
Emil Jannings stars as an aging hotel doorman whose life begins to unravel after he’s fired from his prestigious job. With almost no intertitles, Murnau tells the entire story through movement, performance and Karl Freund’s famously fluid “unchained camera” technique. A landmark of silent cinema and a powerful showcase of just how much a film can say without words.
F.W. Murnau’s The Last Laugh kicks off our Faust & Late Period Murnau series. And that's just the beginning. The series continues with a special 100th anniversary screening of Faust, featuring an original score performed live on the Allen Theatre Organ at Studio Bell.

We are back this October with a pretty exciting lineup! 😈🕯️
Introducing Faust & Late Period Murnau, a month-long series exploring four masterpieces from the final years of F. W. Murnau’s career. From elaborate German Expressionism to the quiet beauty of pure naturalism, the series takes you through the filmmaker’s fascinating late period.
At the centre of it all is Faust (1926), celebrating its 100th anniversary with a very special screening at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. One hundred years after its premiere, Murnau’s Faust returns to the big screen with a live score performed by Chris Maric on the Allen Theatre Organ.
Demons, angels, a deal with the devil, and one of silent cinema’s greatest spectacles, all with a live organist in the room.
