World Book Day
A CELEBRATION OF THE POWER OF BOOKS
In a fast-paced world driven by screens and constant distractions, books remain one of humanity’s most powerful and enduring tools. Quiet yet profound, they carry ideas and knowledge across time and space, shaping minds and transforming lives.
Books are gateways to knowledge. Within their pages lie the discoveries of scientists, the reflections of thinkers and the histories of nations. They make learning accessible, allowing anyone, regardless of background, to explore new ideas and expand their understanding of the world. A single book can open doors to opportunities and ignite a lifelong love for learning.
Beyond knowledge, books serve as both mirrors and windows. As mirrors, they reflect our cultures and our identities, helping us feel seen and understood. As windows, they introduce us to different lives and perspectives fostering empathy and broadening our worldview.
Stories, at the heart of books, have the power to shape how we think and feel. They inspire courage, challenge assumptions and give voice to the unheard. For children, books nurture imagination, language and critical thinking. For adults, they offer reflection, comfort and clarity in moments of uncertainty. In every stage of life, books remain faithful companions.
Books also play a vital role in preserving culture and identity. They document traditions, languages and histories, ensuring that the voices of the past continue to guide the present and influence the future. In this way, books become bridges between generations, safeguarding collective memory.
Importantly, books are tools of empowerment. Literacy enables individuals to access information, make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in society. For many, especially in underserved communities, books provide a pathway to opportunity and self-reliance.
Even in the digital age, the power of books remains unchanged. Whether read in print or listened to as audiobooks, their impact continues to endure. What matters is the connection between the reader and the ideas within the text.
To celebrate the power of books is to recognise their ability to transform individuals and societies. They inform and empower. They nurture imagination and deepen understanding. It is worth noting that in Books lie the power to change lives and ultimately change the world.

International Girls in ICT Day
AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future
Across the world today, digital technologies are no longer a luxury; they are central to how societies learn, communicate, trade and innovate. Yet, despite this rapid digital transformation, girls and young women remain underrepresented in information and communication technologies (ICT), particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI). This gap continues to limit not only individual opportunities but also the inclusiveness of global technological advancement.
International Girls in ICT Day, celebrated annually on 23rd April under the leadership of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), seeks to address this imbalance. It is a global initiative aimed at encouraging girls to pursue careers in technology while actively breaking down the systemic barriers that have historically restricted their participation.
The 2026 theme, “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future,” points out a critical shift from inclusion to leadership. It recognises girls not merely as users of technology but as key contributors to its design and direction.
As AI continues to influence sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture and governance, it becomes increasingly important that its development reflects diverse perspectives. Inclusive AI systems can improve service delivery, enhance productivity and support sustainable development. However, without the active involvement of girls and women, these systems risk reinforcing existing inequalities.
Placing girls at the centre of ICT and AI is both a developmental and economic necessity. The digital economy is expanding yet gender disparities persist across STEM education, technical careers and leadership roles. Bridging this gap ensures more representative solutions and a stronger, more inclusive workforce.
Evidence consistently shows that when girls have equal access to digital tools and training, they perform just as effectively as their male counterparts, showing that the challenge lies in opportunity not ability.
However, participation is shaped by multiple barriers, including limited access to infrastructure, persistent gender stereotypes, lack of mentorship, financial constraints and underrepresentation in decision-making spaces.
Addressing these challenges requires deliberate and sustained efforts. Initiatives linked to Girls in ICT Day such as mentorship programmes, coding workshops and AI training play a vital role in building skills and aspiration among young girls.
Therefore, exposure to career pathways in areas like AI, robotics, cybersecurity and digital entrepreneurship is equally important. When girls see relatable role models and real-world applications of technology, they begin to envision themselves in these spaces.
This shift in perception is crucial for long-term inclusion.
Ensuring meaningful participation also demands collective responsibility. Governments, educators, private sector stakeholders and communities must invest in digital infrastructure, integrate technology education at early levels, provide targeted support for girls in STEM and promote inclusive workplace policies. These efforts are essential to creating an enabling environment where girls can thrive.
Ultimately, the future of AI will shape the future of society. For that future to be equitable and sustainable, it must be built by diverse voices. International Girls in ICT Day serves as a strong pointer that the digital world is still evolving and girls must be at its centre. They are not simply participants in the digital age; they are active shapers of its direction and impact.
On 1/5/2025, AICD launched the Community Led Monitoring (CLM) Project at Makada Health Clinic, in line with ACOMIN’s efforts on Malaria Control, Immunization, and Nutrition. The project includes several key activities:
Focus Group Discussions (FGDs): The Community Accountability Team (CAT) engages vulnerable groups—especially pregnant women and mothers of under-five children—on Antenatal care, Malaria, Tuberculosis, and HIV, focusing on causes, prevention, and treatment. They also emphasize hygiene, avoiding self-medication, and collaborating with health facilities.
Client Exit Interviews (CEIs): Using a standardized ACOMIN questionnaire, clients are interviewed as they leave the facility about commodity availability, service quality, and social amenities.
Advocacy Visits: CAT meets with key stakeholders to find solutions to identified issues and build partnerships for sustaining the project beyond CAT’s involvement in the community.

Constant fatigue & lack of motivation?
Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed?
Feeling overwhelmed or anxious often?
Difficulty sleeping or changes in appetite?
