Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Learning Centre - Calgary

The Learning Centre officially opens again Monday, September 14th for fall tutoring. We are excited to see our continuing learners and welcome some new ones!

Behind the scenes we have been preparing a new cohort of eager tutor trainees. They will soon be embarking on their practicum which is sure to be a life changing experience for both the tutor and the child.

… and so the journey begins.

In a few weeks our tutoring will resume once again – only this time a few familiar faces will be missing! In June we honored 15 dedicated learners that have now completed their program at our Learning Centre. It was awe inspiring to realize the true impact this program has on our children, as so many shared their appreciation and experience of their time here at the Learning Centre.

Our graduation ceremony not only acknowledged our young learners, but our older ones too! We had 7 tutors graduate from their course and practicum ‘Program in Remedial Tutoring for Dyslexia’. This is a long journey that goes beyond the training. It is a belief in the approach, connecting with their learners and working in partnership to make literacy a reality.

These remarkable achievements do not happen in isolation – our learners and tutors are successful because of the many relationships and commitments of others in the Learning Centre community.

Our families – parents and children who trust the process.

Our mentors that guide and encourage us.

Our Board of Directors who stewards our mission to make literacy accessible.

Our donators who value our mission and choose to support us.

Our volunteers who show up and assist in so many ways.

and ……

Our trainer who not only gave us the knowledge but empowered us. As we bid farewell to Thelma, we know the ripple effect of her dedication will forever live on in our Learning Centre here in Calgary.

We are so grateful for our trainers who provide support for us both in person and from afar SR Learning Centre Halifax Their continual support to our tutors during their training is phenomenal. They provide knowledge, encouragement, and guidance - they do it all!

How fortunate we are to wrap up our year with a visit from each of them.

A visit from Zoe during the month of May brought an action-packed weekend …

-a well-attended information session for our next tutor training group starting in August

-a full day of ongoing training for our current tutor training group

-numerous observation lessons that bolster the learning of our tutors in training

We look forward to Thelma’s visit in June which will bring final testing for many of our learners, complete with a graduation ceremony. This ceremony will honour our hardworking learners that are concluding their program at the Learning Centre. In addition it will recognize tutor trainees who have completed their training program.

A huge thank you to Zoe and Thelma. Your impact on our Learning Centre has allowed us to grow and thrive.

As a non profit organization we have rent to pay and expenses like everyone else.

Financial donations are greatly appreciated, but it goes beyond the dollars and cents. It is a knowing that you believe in us and the work that we are doing in our community.

How do you make 44 different sounds out of 26 letters?

Sounds like a brain teaser doesn’t it!

That’s what the English language involves … permutations and combinations of the 26 letters in the alphabet form 44 distinct sound units called phonemes.

It’s referred to as a code - ‘breaking the code’ can be extremely difficult for people with dyslexia.

Reading is not natural.

Unlike speaking, it is a learned skill.

For those with dyslexia developing this skill takes more effort.

A systematic and explicit teaching approach is effective.
