Are you missing a neutered English bulldog approximately 4/5 years old? We received a call this morning from CARE who has a stray turned in wandering the dovercourt area in Calgary registered to us. His microchip batch dates back to 2022 and I am still searching for his contracted owners in our data base, but in the meantime hoping to speed this process up with a post. I want to take a minute to talk about breeding goals and the genuine preservation of canine breeds. I know I don’t post as often as I used to or educate as freely as I once did but life gets away with you and upon looking at Stolas today I felt it was due.

I want to start by saying that there is a vast difference between dogs that are “well bred” and dogs that are “pure bred”. So very often we hear “pure bred” or “show dog” and think this means a dog is “well bred” when in fact it is the opposite.

When we limit a dogs gene pool and spend decades line breeding and inbreeding we remove diversity in the line and create predictability but we also limit that dog to a very small gene pool of recessive and dominant genes in which the breed cannot thrive naturally.

The English bulldog was not always the dumpy broken and health ridden dog you so often see today. It was once a regal and respected breed with power and athleticism. Unfortunately with so much human intervention and modification we reduced this once magnificent breed down to a hob goblin shell of what they once were. We removed their function and purpose and riddled them with unnecessary health issues, behavioural issues and nutritional deficiencies.

Very often you will hear elitist show breeders preach about conservation, which ultimately means line breeding and ribbons, covering a diversity of genetic messes with titles and public shaming. Extreme color breeders are no better, they see a color and forget about the rest of the dog creating pretty monstrosities guaranteed to die by 6 or 7.

When I first started breeding 15 years ago this exact dog was my goal. A clean, well rounded dog with excellent breathing, conformation, temperament, no corked tails or cherry eye, and a striking external presence.

Creating beautiful and healthy purebred dogs doesn’t happen over night, it takes decades of trial and error, genetic surprises, problem solving and a the equivalent to a PHD in vet bills. Stepping outside the box, challenging prognosis’s and advocating for your vision in order to create a healthy, beautiful, functional dog that can both work and fit into a family setting.

Stolas just turned 1, so he has a lot filing out to do still while he is learning boundaries and finding his footing - but boy does he have potential. He is a purebred English bulldog that has function. That can breathe. Whose skull isn’t so deformed his teeth become the brunt of comical memes and people say “that’s a face only a mother could love”.

Bulldogs should be capable and intimidating as their original purpose and function was to bull bait. When we removed that we created the broken money pits you see today.

Now although I have achieved my goal in honouring this breed and its original function while maintaining its “pure bred integrity and registration”, show breeders and puritans will still throw stones and publicly shame like we are in the midst of a witch trial. lol

But the proof is in the pudding, and this my friends is that pudding.

Stolas will start breeding this fall and reproducing dogs of his quality. I can’t wait to see the puppies he will produce. I don’t care what color they are as long as they are as well bred as he is.
