The Calgary Centre of the RASC is an astronomy club for amateurs and professionals. We have our own private observatory with a Celestron 14 telescope as well as a set of smaller telescopes for use by members. Our meetings are free and open to the public. We hold astronomy presentations and public education events throughout the year, and have astronomy group camps during the summer.

If Earth picked up an alien signal, should humans reply or stay quiet? That’s one of the many questions our experts tackle in CTV Calgary/RASC Calgary’s July episode of Ask an Astronomer with !

Robyn Foret with RASC Calgary Centre thinks answering an alien message could be exactly what unifies our divided planet. Space science educator Don Hladiuk () also joins us on this episode where he breaks down a historic, real-time cosmic rescue mission.

Plus, you could win your very own smart telescope! If you live in Alberta, head over to our Ask an Astronomer page and submit a question for our astronomers.

If we feature your question on the show, you’ll be entered into a draw for your chance to win a Dwarf Mini smart telescope courtesy of the RASC Calgary Centre. Our current President, Heather Laird (.astro), shared some images from her downtown light polluted balcony to show off what it’s capable of!

Full contest details can be found at our linktree or on our website for Ask An Astronomer! Happy stargazing! ✨💫😎

Today is International Moon Day, celebrating the anniversary of humanity’s first steps on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 🌕

Apollo 11 showed the world what was possible through curiosity, collaboration, and innovation. More than five decades later, the Moon continues to inspire exploration as new missions, including NASA’s Artemis program, look toward humanity’s next chapter of lunar discovery.

Whether through space missions or backyard observations, the Moon remains a source of wonder for us all. Take a moment to look up and explore our closest celestial neighbour!
