It’s Thursday, and you know what means… it’s time for a little stroll down memory lane as the BVCG celebrates its 45th anniversary this year! The second Guild fundraiser for the BVCG was a coil-bound address/calligraphy quotations book (after the Nature calendar in 1983) that contained the works of 69 BVCG members who submitted a total of 109 pieces. It took eight months to produce the book and fifteen hundred copies were printed in 1984. Printing costs were largely covered by pre-publication sales. The address book was sold to members and available for sale at various events.
The “Connections” committee consisted of Patti Dawkins, Carol Hrycenko, Betty Locke, Connie MacRae, Jean Wegerhoff and Ron Wright.
With the help of Clarks Art & Drafting as our sponsor, the Stampede provided us with a twelve by twenty-eight foot space to exhibit our artwork, do daily demos and sell copies of Connections (200 copies were sold there). Thank you to Annette Wichmann for the write up and photos!

BVCG was a big winner at this year’s Calgary Stampede. Nine members participated in the competition and one member submitted calligraphy to the Glowing Hearts, People’s Choice category. Congratulations to Alma Taylor who won first prize in the calligraphy category and third prize in the drawing section with the same piece. Ann Purdy won second prize in the calligraphy category and Sarah Widdowson won third for her calligraphy submission. . A hearty YAHOO of gratitude to the nine volunteer ambassadors (aka the BVCG posse) who lettered over 200 bookmarks during our demo day! We will be sharing the terrific calligraphic artwork submissions on our social media channels. Stay tuned!

Congratulations to all of the Washington Calligraphers Guild Graceful Envelope Contest Winners!
2026 THEME: GREAT BEGINNINGS
And a very special CONGRATULATIONS to Valerie Louis, one of our very own talented calligraphers! Way to go Valerie!
Entrants were asked to celebrate an event that marked the beginning of something new—such as a collaboration, discovery, invention, or movement—that proved beneficial to society. Entries were judged by the representation of the contest theme, the quality of calligraphy or artistic lettering, and effective use of color and design including the incorporation of postage stamp(s).
We can’t wait to hear next year’s theme!
And once again, Happy 50th Anniversary to the Washington Calligraphers Guild!
