Fig Tree Foundation is a charity that supports Calgary-based organizations working in international development.
We do this by providing grants and loans as well as networking and learning opportunities. Fig Tree Foundation supports Calgary-based organizations that work in international development. We do this by providing funding options through grants and loans and by providing networking and learning opportunities. We also raise public awareness about international development by hosting events and sharing information. Fig Tree Foundation was established in 2005 by a group of concerned Calgarians that had a desire to contribute to international development initiatives. Since then we have provided more than $420,000 in funding to support projects in 14 different countries. Previously funded project areas include: gender equality, health, education, training, renewable energy, microfinance, reforestation, agriculture, water and sanitation, and small business development. We have established a thorough evaluation process to ensure projects we fund are sustainable, supported by the local community and will have a lasting beneficial impact. We are currently working on a social enterprise grant so organizations can pilot social enterprise ideas.

Our Story
The Fig Tree Foundation was established in 2005 by a group of concerned Calgarians that had a desire to contribute to international development initiatives, but soon discovered that in addition to a lack of funding to established groups, there existed a lack of co-ordination and collaboration amongst groups, leading to duplication of efforts and less than optimal utilization of existing resources.
In 2006, the Fig Tree Foundation obtained its status as a charitable foundation and has since then, thanks to countless hours of volunteer support, built an organization that has been focused on improving the quality of international development initiatives that come out of the Calgary community while supporting a network of organizations that deliver them.
