Over the weekend, I was out at our family cabin, kayaking on the lake, and it really hit me how much I needed that time to decompress. Quiet, stillness and no pressure.

I love what I do, but running a business, managing a team, and working full-time as a behaviour consultant means I’m almost always “on.”

And when I don’t intentionally slow down, I feel it. I feel drained, irritable, more easily frustrated, and on edge.

Now imagine living like that without the ability to step away or regulate yourself.

That’s often what life feels like for reactive dogs.

When we take them on daily neighbourhood walks, they’re exposed to the same triggers over and over again. Dogs, people, bikes, noise. Over time, they build a learning history that the environment is overwhelming.

Think about things like:
• Dogs charging and barking in yards
• Tight sidewalks with no space
• Triggers appearing suddenly around corners

After enough of those experiences, your dog starts to expect it. The environment becomes stressful, and walks are less enjoyable because they are on high alert.

If they never get a chance to truly decompress, progress is hard.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is take a step back.

I regularly recommend that my clients take a break from neighbourhood walks for a couple of weeks to allow their dog to reset and get space from their triggers. When we remove those stressors, it gives us a much clearer picture of their behaviour and allows us to start training from a better place.

This might look like:
• Decompression walks on a long line (20–25 ft) in quiet, no/low trigger environments
• Private off-leash rentals
• Driving to calm trails or country roads for walks

Just like us, dogs can’t learn or cope well when they’re constantly overwhelmed.
