Outlink has been known by several names over the years, serving Calgary’s gender and sexually diverse communities through decades of social change, crisis, community-building, and care. Officially incorporated in 1984 as Gay Lines Calgary, our history reaches back even further to the leadership and legacy of Gay Information and Resources Calgary which was in operation from 1975 to 1983.
While we may be the oldest exclusively 2SLGBTQ+ direct service organization still in operation in the city, we are certainly not the oldest q***r organization more broadly. The Imperial Court of the Chinook Arch is officially the oldest still running q***r organization in the city, and organizations like SafeLink have been serving our communities for decades. Many others came before and have come and gone since. We are excited to see what will come next and how we might work together to support our communities!
It is important to remember that gender and sexually diverse people have long organized on multiple fronts, both formally and informally, and that our work is a continuation of a long and rich history. Before Outlink, of course there was GIRC as well as The Womyn’s Collective who ran the Le***an Information Line. Many of these groups operated out of the historical Old Y Building in the heart of the Beltline, which we were proud to call home for many years.
To learn more about Calgary q***r history, follow the Calgary Gay History Project and pick up a copy of “Our Past Matters: Stories of Gay Calgary” written by former Outlink Board member, Kevin Allen.
Outlink is inherited community infrastructure. People before us built this organization because Calgary needed a place where 2SLGBTQ+ people could find support, connection, and belonging. The responsibility now is to make sure that work does not disappear on our watch. Losing Outlink would mean losing more than a nonprofit. It would mean losing a long-standing point of connection, memory, trust, and care for our communities.
Help save q***r history and make sure Outlink is still here tomorrow by donating today at saveoutlink.ca. Your support helps keep this work sustainable, turning q***r histories into q***r futures.

Calgary Outlink has been serving Calgary’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities since 1984. For over 40 years, it has been a place people could turn to for support, referrals, peer connection, community groups, education, and belonging. Outlink is one of the longest-running 2SLGBTQ+ serving organizations in Calgary, and it remains one of the only organizations in the city whose explicit mandate is to serve gender and sexually diverse people across the whole community.
Right now, that legacy is at risk. Rising costs, nation-wide declines in charitable giving and volunteerism, shifting funder priorities, and limited granting opportunities have put increased pressure on organizations across the sector to do more with less. We are working hard on long-term sustainability, but immediate support is needed to give the organization time and stability by helping us cover core operating needs while we pursue longer-term funding.
Like many small nonprofits, Outlink relies on a mix of grants, donations, partnerships, and community support. At this moment, that funding mix is not enough to sustain operations, and we are facing a serious enough shortfall that closure is a real possibility if we cannot secure new funding.
If Outlink closes, Calgary does not just lose an office or a set of programs. We lose community infrastructure that has taken decades to build. We are asking our community now to help ensure that this support remains available for the next person who needs it, and for the next generation of 2SLGBTQ+ Calgarians.
Outlink was built on community support. Help sustain a legacy of connection and care by making a tax-deductible donation today at saveoutlink.ca (linked in our bio) and by sharing our campaign with your networks. Every donation, at any amount, helps keep our doors open and our program available. Thank you for believing in this work and in the people we serve.
You can donate through the link in our bio or at saveoutlink.ca
In love and solidarity,
Your friends at Outlink
