Quick little sketch of Princess Kate I did as a small gesture of thanks for a very supportive returning client. I’ve heard other artists mention that Kate is a challenge to capture, and I do agree, but I had a lot of fun with this little drawing!

Princess Kate / 4x6” / Graphite on Paper

“Coronation Day of Queen Elizabeth II” / 12x16” / NFS (commissioned)

This piece was so much fun to paint! Creating those illusions of reflection and sparkle are always so satisfying when they are working! 👩🏻‍🎨

The photo I was working from the most was incredible quality at its original dimensions, although once cropped to the desired composition, all the details did begin to become a bit blurry and jumbled, so I had to strike a balance between painting what I knew was there (using other references of the jewels, gown, and abbey alone) and what I was seeing in front of me. This meant I allowed a bit more colour in painting the jewels and her gown, and subtly enhanced some highlights of the creases in here robe for visual interest, while allowing the backdrop to be a small bit dimmer so she would come forward a touch more.

Can you guess which part was the most difficult bit to paint?

This piece was painted after the beautiful photograph by Cecil Beaton, taken June 2nd, 1953. His photograph includes a wider view of the Queen’s gown and robe, as well as the backdrop of Westminster Abbey behind her.

Current WIP. This is a commissioned piece.

Work in progress! You haven’t seen her in a while… or me, because I’ve been busy working on a couple commissions, and now, finally back at this piece, it’s been slow going, just adjusting the whites in this piece A LOT! Next I’ll be working on refining the hair and face, then finish up with the tufted bits of the duvet.

I hope to have this piece finished to bring to the Beacon Original Art Spring Art Show & Sale, April 25th from 10am to 4pm! Hope to see you there if you live in the Calgary and surrounding areas! Please come; you’re more than welcomed even just to visit with some great artists and see some incredible artwork in person! 🤗
