This roadway and utility corridor along the John Hart Highway was captured using UAV LiDAR in less than 30 minutes, producing a high-density dataset containing more than 76 million points across a 400 m corridor.

The original project scope required only classified point cloud deliverables. Following the initial survey, additional features were requested that were outside the original project scope. Rather than mobilizing a survey crew for another site visit, the project team was able to leverage the LiDAR dataset already collected and extracted additional features directly from the office. The client received the files within a day, saving both time and project costs without setting foot back on site.

This project demonstrates a key advantage of LiDAR technology: one site visit can support multiple deliverables, even as project requirements change. By eliminating the need for a return trip, the client benefited from faster turnaround, reduced costs, and greater project efficiency.

As-built surveys completed by Alberta Land Surveyors are an important part of responsible public lands management. They ensure that the disposition holder has a clear understanding of where their asset, and ultimately the extent of their responsibilities, are accurately located, while the public can be assured that unauthorized or unregulated disturbances or trespasses have not occurred. This picture shows exactly the work that surveyors do. Our field crew navigated the rugged terrain within the Crowsnest Pass to as-built an access road near Ma Butte.

It's not always easy work, but it's an important part of helping projects and public lands coexist responsibly.
