I used to fall 2001 the year that rock music got good again. To be fair I was heavily into the blues garage rock revival that was going on specifically, but the mid-to-late 90s had gotten really disparate for good straightforward rock music like we experienced back in ‘91. If you don’t believe me take a look at the lineup for Woodstock ‘99 🤢 even some great non rock albums came out, daft punk and Jay-z both had great showings as well. Not to mention The Avalanches ground breaking first album!. Next week we’ll be diving into 2011 as well ni honestly tried to get 2021 on the list but we couldn’t find enough amazing albums that came out that we own on vinyl so 2011 will be the last in the first-year-of-every-decade series but it did get us going down the rabbit hole of great years in music that we’ll probably be revisiting soon for Play & Stay.

Another great round up of music from 1991. So much seminal Hip Hop came out this year it’s really crazy. Another list of amazing debuts (Tupac’s first album came out in ‘91, Del The Funky Homosapien, Black Sheep, not hip hop but Massive Attack’s first record Blue Lines came out this year and we’re gonna be playing it too) but a lot of follow-up records: 1991 saw Tribe Called Quest, Slick Rick, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah, and Gang Starr all release their second albums. The only outlier from this list is Public Enemy’s Apocalypse 1991 not being a debut or follow-up record. People talk a lot about 90s hip hop, well this is about where it started. All classics. Our giveaway this week is a copy of Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory from Sloth Records, come on down and enjoy some amazing music with us.

So much great music came out in ‘91 we had to split it into 2 nights, to cover all the amazing hip hop that was also came out that year. Not only was the year full of classic albums, a lot of them were bands major label debuts too. Nirvana and Pearl Jam are two who were introduced to the world at large that year. I got so far down the rabbit hole that it made me think of all the great music that came out in 2001 too. So then I check 2011 and sure enough, we’re gonna have a series of ___1 years’ best albums. Or magpies favourites at least. We’ll see you there!

Told y’all I’d be more on the ball for next week! Listening to Stevie Winder is always a happy place for me, works for hit and rainy weather. Since we’re getting a bit of both felt fitting to build a night around one of the most peerless artists to ever do it. Stevie signed with Motown Records at age 11 and became the youngest solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 at age 13 with “Fingertips.” At 21 he signed a new contract with Motown that gave him complete control of his records (highly uncommon at the time) with that control he gave us Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, selling over 128 million albums and winning 25 Grammy’s along the way. He mastered the piano, harmonica, and drums entirely by ear and played most instruments on those classic 70s albums himself. And in case you forgot, he’s been blind almost his entire life. He was among the first to use electronic instruments and massive modular synthesizers in mainstream funk and soul, helping change the genre’s sonic landscape forever. I still have the Casio SK-One I got when I was 8 years old after I saw him play one on TV. We’re gonna be celebrating his impact with a lot of his records and some contemporaries as well as some music that still has his influence in it.

NEW NOODLES 🍜🍜🍜

Starting tonight we’re adding a Cold Peanut* Satay Noodle Soup to our late night food menu 💥 (*🥜Peanut-Free!!🥜) As you know, every night after 10pm we have our two vegan ramens available - spicy kimchi, and creamy mushroom. We thought we’d throw caution to the wind and add a cold option for anyone feeling the heat this month. Cold noodles, seasoned tvp meat, corn, green onions, sliced cucumbers, and sesame seeds. Served over a very mildly spicy, rich, peanut-flavored* broth.

*Peanut free!!! We did our best to make this as peanuty tasting as we could without making anyone worry about allergies (there is soy in our base so not everyone is in the clear unfortunately) So come give it a shot, let us know what you think.
