It was the talk of the town at this year's UBCM Convention in Vancouver.

And on September 22nd, Premier David Eby pulled the trigger and issued the writs for the 2026 Provincial Election for October 24th, one week after the 2026 BC Municipal Election.

Municipal leaders are now asking a question that could have very real consequences for candidates, voters and election officials: What happens when a provincial election and a municipal election collide?

But British Columbia wouldn't be the first province to face the challenge.

In October of 2025, Newfoundland and Labrador found itself in almost exactly this situation. The province's municipal election was held October 2, followed just 12 days later by a provincial election on October 14. The provincial writs were issued September 15, right in the middle of the municipal campaign.

Today, we look back at that extraordinary election period with Alexis Foster, Acting CAO of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.

Our roundtable will explore what it means to be a woman in municipal government, some of the challenges and opportunities around encouraging more women to run for office, and the important role that mentorship and networks can play in supporting and fostering the next generation of municipal leaders.

The Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention kicked off in style last week in downtown Vancouver, bringing together municipal leaders from towns, cities, villages, and electoral areas from across the province.

The annual convention is an opportunity for local leaders to come together, share challenges, discuss common priorities, and look ahead at the issues facing communities following the October 17th municipal elections.

On the second day of the UBCM convention, electoral area directors gathered to discuss some of the unique challenges facing rural and regional communities across British Columbia.

We spoke with the Honourable Brittny Anderson, Minister of State for Local Governments and Rural Communities, and Steve Morissette, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development about what they were hearing.
