After a summer break, the Connections Café is back and we can’t wait to welcome our members to join us to re-connect! For those of you who may be wondering what the Connections Café is it’s an informal gathering of our local Calgary Chapter members to connect, be curious, and bring any questions you may have about the world of coaching. Join us on 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟳 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗳é 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟬:𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟭:𝟯𝟬 𝗮𝗺. Will we see you there?

Connections Café occurs every third Thursday of the month in the downtown core and surrounding area. Our goal is to make the location as accessible as possible to our members.

This week, we’re getting to know 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗣𝗖𝗖, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, outside of her leadership role.

"I am a passionate gardener who talks to her plants, an avid walker who chases the sunshine, and a nana to three grandkids who keep me laughing and on my toes."

Whether she’s nurturing her garden or keeping up with her grandkids, Laurie brings that same warmth and energy to our ICF Calgary community!

When we asked Laurie what inspired her to step into the world of coaching, here’s her insight of Intention vs Impact:

“I became a coach because I’m inspired by helping capable leaders navigate the space where intent and impact diverge.

Supporting people under pressure to slow down, see their patterns, and expand their leadership range is deeply meaningful to me.

Coaching lets me partner with leaders - not to fix them, but to help them grow with greater awareness, choice, and authenticity.”

"I once wanted to be a cricketer. Ended up coaching humans instead."

While the arena might look a little different today, Deepak brings that same level of strategy, dedication, and team spirit to supporting leaders across our coaching community! 🌟

When we asked Deepak what inspired him to step into coaching, he shared a profoundly moving personal story that highlights the heart, human connection, and core purpose behind his work:

"I became a coach because I needed one and didn't have one. At 13, I lost my father to terrorism. What followed was loneliness, silence, and no one to turn to. That experience gave me a clear purpose: to become the presence others need when they are stuck, struggling, or searching.

A decade of coaching practice, an ICF PCC credential, and four published books later, that purpose hasn't changed. In an AI era that optimizes everything except the human inside the professional, it matters more than ever."

Deepak's unwavering dedication to human-centered leadership and deep empathy bring so much strength to our ICF Calgary board and coaching community.

While you often see our Board of Directors leading events and chapter initiatives, today we want to shine a bright light on the incredible heart and force behind our daily operations, our Executive Virtual Assistant, Chantel Sommerfeld! 💫

Chantel keeps our board connected, organized, and running smoothly. When we asked her what she enjoys most about supporting the ICF Calgary Chapter, her answer truly captured the spirit of our community:

"What I enjoy most about supporting the ICF Calgary Chapter is the people. It’s a genuinely supportive group made up of individuals who care about one another, the coaching community, and finding ways to make things better for everyone.

I also really appreciate the Chapter’s willingness to look at how things have been done in the past and ask, 'Is this still the best way?' There’s a real openness to reviewing processes, considering new ideas, and making changes when there’s an opportunity to improve.

It makes supporting the Chapter especially rewarding because it feels like everyone is working toward the same goal, continuing to learn, improve, and build a strong and supportive coaching community together."
