Before and After removing all the deadwood from an old spruce tree in NW Calgary.

This tree was affected by Mountain Pine Beetle.
Sapwood turns a greyish-blue colour because the beetles carry spores of blue-stain fungus that stains the wood.This can only be seen when viewing a cross-section of the tree.
