It’s been a busy end of the year, and as an RMT my schedule has been quite full. I haven’t updated my video for almost a month. But even when things get busy, I still like to make time to volunteer at the nursing home. It feels grounding and meaningful.

Volunteering at the seniors’ home this weekend, bringing moments of peace and connection. It’s always fulfilling to contribute to the community in meaningful ways. 🌿🎶

If you’ve been dealing with heel pain, you may have heard the words heel spur or plantar fasciitis. And when you see an X-ray that shows a big spur, it’s easy to assume that’s the whole story.

Here’s the truth: heel pain is often more complicated. Many people have spurs and never feel pain, while others struggle with pain even when the spur is small. That’s because the pain often comes from how the foot and ankle are working — not just from the spur itself.

One key player is the talus bone in your ankle. If the talus isn’t moving the way it should, your ankle can’t bend properly. This lack of movement puts extra strain on the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue that supports your arch. Over time, that added stress can lead to pain, inflammation, and yes, even spurs.

This is a great graphic by Dr. Caleb Burgess!

When we do something and it hurts and we keep going we are challenging the nervous system and ultimately causing neuroplastic changes.

This is the big 3!
✅ Cognitive - you made a conscious effort to keep going.
✅ Sensory - you kept going despite the negative sensory input
✅ Motor - you kept moving despite the desire to want to stop and the negative sensory input.

This is also why, uncomfortable active treatments are superior to passive light techniques.

😌What My Clients Say

The serratus anterior is the muscle that connects it all.
It suctions your scapula to your ribs, pulls you out of extension so you can breathe, and ties arm swing to the opposite leg so you can walk.

No serratus, no shoulder. No serratus, no breath. No serratus, no gait.

Save this if you want to remember why serratus work matters. Share it with your favorite anatomy nerd. 09/23/2025

In my massage practice, I often see clients with shallow breathing and tension in the upper back, especially around the shoulder blades. A lot of the time, this comes from a tight serratus anterior.

This muscle runs along the side of the chest and attaches to the inner edge of the shoulder blade. It’s a deep and sensitive area, particularly along the side of the body, so I always adjust my pressure and techniques based on how the client feels. When the serratus anterior is relaxed, the shoulders feel freer, breathing becomes deeper and easier. Overall, clients just feel more comfortable and relaxed.
