After a brief hiatus over the summer months, Voices of Canmore are back! Hear what Sian Barraclough has to say about respecting Canmore's well-established governing documents.
While I am not opposed to the development of a spa and hotel in Canmore, I am opposed to a spa and hotel on this land. And, the decision to not allow this development on this land should not be a difficult one. We are lucky to have had the foresight to undertake comprehensive and objective reviews and processes years ago, to establish what should be built where in Canmore and the Bow Valley and to maintain space for wildlife. We only need to respect these frameworks – both the Municipal Development Plan and Wildlife Corridor and Habitat Patch Guidelines – to conclude that this is the wrong place for the proposed spa and hotel.

Took a walk on the Rundleview greenspace last evening and the land is chock full of wildflowers. We counted approximately 30 different species. So beautiful at this time of year - and so worth keeping as greenspace for the the enjoyment of all. We met a couple from Calgary who were married at the wedding park three years ago and return regularly to enjoy the views and open space.

Rick Daniel, our latest Voice of Canmore, commenting on one of the impacts of the proposed hotel and spa on wildlife and the greenspace "maternity ward": "You can imagine if this hotel is developed, that little forest would be totally changed. It is already surrounded on three sides by residential neighbourhood. And now there would be a big hotel here and a staff residence back in this area. Wildlife looking for a safe place from predators are not going to come through the resort property and down into this wooded area. It will be now totally cut off for wildlife in a way that it never has been before. So I not only want to see this area up here protected, I want to see this wooded area still accessible to wildlife."

Open house for Staircase Lands Glamping Proposal
We are posting this for our friends and neighbours. Different proposal; similar concerns.
TrailHaus has scheduled its OpenHaus for June 24 regarding the proposed Staircase Lands glamping development at Canmore Nordic Centre from 5pm-7pm..
The proposed 74-unit commercial campground is planned for the Staircase Lands adjacent to Quarry Lake, directly beside established residential neighbourhoods including Peaks of Grassi, The Homesteads and Rundleview.
The impacts of this proposal would not be limited to the campground site itself. Residents have raised concerns about potential effects on:
• Quarry Lake and its recreational capacity
• Wildlife corridors connecting the Bow Valley ecosystem
• Wildfire risk and emergency evacuation routes
• Traffic and parking pressures
• Water quality
• Human-wildlife conflict
• Neighbourhood character and quality of life
Whether you support the project, oppose it, or are still gathering information, June 24 is an opportunity to ask questions and hear directly from the developer. We encourage residents to attend, ask respectful but direct questions, and seek clear answers supported by technical studies and evidence.
The Staircase Lands Opposition Committee continues to monitor the proposal, review new information, and advocate for responsible planning decisions that protect Quarry Lake, surrounding neighbourhoods, and the long-term interests of the Bow Valley.

An informed community is a strong community. We hope to see a large turnout on June 24.
A new voice of Canmore! Author Bob Sanford looks at broader development issues in the community over the past few decades: “I now fight every day against dispossession and blatant diminishment and loss of the natural character that inspired me to make our future here. In a way, it's the classic story of the West. Too much of what started out as being good for the community becomes its destructive opposite. It's not too late, but we need to value and cherish where we live and trust firmly in the sense of place we possess to guide us to a different future. The future we want and need.”
