One thing I never truly understood about leadership and growing a company, is how incredibly special the members of my team would be to me.

I've worked in offices over the years that felt transactional and just a desk job so I knew that I wanted our company to feel different. I'm not supposed to say "like family" but more like true team mates that collaborate, have inside jokes, handle the hard situations and push through together.

Today we said goodbye to Sarah, my very first design hire. She has a year long opportunity to work in Disney World (amazing!!) and she will be back with us once she's got that out of her system :) but seeing her empty desk and reading her beautiful 4 page long letter to me was far more emotional than I even imagined it would be.

She's exactly who you would want working alongside you. Dedicated, hardworking, creative, open to growing and learning, and all around a very valuable member of our team.

Thank you, Sarah, for all you've done in your role here at Rexford and we're excited to follow along on your grand adventure 🀍🀍🀍

There's a discussion over on LinkedIn about women feeling comfortable on construction sites so I had to share a bit about what we do after my 20 years of experience on different types of construction sites.

When bringing young women (and men) onto our architectural & interior design teams, one of the conversations we have is about feeling confident on construction sites.

Not surprisingly, many are initially hesitant to walk a site, speak with trades, ask questions or confidently share their professional opinions with a crew.

But through mentorship within the company, many hours spent together on site, and taking the time to explain the technical details and the β€œwhy” behind what we’re seeing, that changes quickly.

They gain confidence because they recognize that they have the technical knowledge, a valuable perspective, and every right to be there.

Side note: We have INCREDIBLE trades, builders and vendors which are consistently engaging and welcoming to ideas, tough conversations and respectful to our whole team.
