Not all drilling is the same.
⛏️ Explorers mainly use two methods, and each has a job.

Diamond drilling uses a diamond-tipped bit to cut a solid cylinder of rock - "core." It's slower and costs more, but you get an intact sample you can log, photograph and split for the lab. Reverse circulation (RC) drilling is faster and cheaper: it brings rock chips to the surface for sampling, which is great for testing targets quickly, though with less geological detail than core.
Many programs use both - RC to cover ground, diamond core where detail matters most.

How do you know an exploration result can be trusted? A lot of it comes down to QA/QC, quality assurance and quality control.

Before a sample ever produces a number, explorers follow strict steps: core is logged and split, samples are sealed and uniquely numbered, and a documented chain of custody tracks each one to an accredited lab. Labs also run standards, blanks and duplicates to check their own accuracy. It's the unglamorous work that makes a result credible, and it's a big part of why disclosure standards exist.

Resource vs. reserve - What's the difference?
These two terms sound similar but mean very different things. A mineral resource is an estimate of metal that's potentially there, based on drilling and sampling.
A mineral reserve is the portion of that resource shown to be economically and legally mineable after detailed engineering and economic studies.
In short: every reserve starts as a resource, but not every resource becomes a reserve.
Knowing which term a company is using tells you a lot about how far along a project really is.

How does core drilling work?
⛏️ When explorers want to see what's underground, they use a hollow, diamond-tipped drill bit to cut a cylindrical sample of rock, the "core." That intact column is pulled to surface, logged by geologists, then split and sent to a lab for testing. Because it preserves the rock exactly as it sits underground, core gives explorers the clearest read on what's really down there.

It's how much metal is packed into the rock, grams per tonne for gold, or a percentage for metals like copper and zinc. Here's the part that surprises people: a smaller high-grade deposit can be worth more to mine than a giant low-grade one. Size gets headlines; grade drives economics. Gold is often so sparse in rock that you can walk right over a real system without seeing a thing. So how do geologists find it? They look for its fingerprints.

Gold rarely travels alone. When a gold-bearing system forms, it usually carries a signature of other elements alongside it, things like arsenic, antimony, bismuth, tellurium, and copper. These are called pathfinder elements. Individually they are not the target. What makes them useful is that they are often easier to detect and more widespread than the gold itself.

So when a lab analyzes soil or rock samples, geologists do not just look at the gold number. They look at the whole suite of elements together. A cluster of pathfinders can trace the outline of a mineralizing system that is too subtle to spot from gold alone, and it helps a team decide where to focus the next, more expensive stage of work.

It is the same discipline every time. Pathfinders point, they do not prove. Elevated arsenic or antimony tells you a system may be present. It does not tell you there is gold worth mining, or how much, or how deep. The only way to answer that is to keep testing, with more sampling and eventually drilling.

If you follow exploration, this is one of those behind-the-scenes details that changes how you read a company's results. The gold number gets the headline, but geologists are often reading the elements around it just as closely.

Exploration companies often talk about finding an "anomaly." It sounds like a discovery. Here's what the word actually means, and what it doesn't.
In gold exploration, one of the first tools is soil sampling. A crew collects soil across a grid, sends it to a lab, and measures the tiny amounts of gold and other elements in each sample. When a cluster of samples reads higher than the normal background level for the area, that cluster is called an anomaly.

An anomaly is a signal worth investigating. It means something in the ground is putting slightly elevated metal into the soil above it. That can point to mineralization at depth, and it helps geologists decide where to focus the next.
An anomaly is a clue, not a conclusion. Soil chemistry can be affected by many things, and elevated readings at surface do not confirm what, or how much, sits below.

The only way to find out is to keep working: detailed sampling, geophysics, and eventually drilling.

So when you read that a company has identified a promising anomaly, that's genuinely useful news. It just sits early in a long process, and the interesting question is always the same one: what did the follow-up work show?

You'll sometimes see a mining company report a single rock sample with an eye-popping gold number. Before getting excited, here's what experienced investors check first.

Gold grades are measured in grams per tonne (g/t). For context, many producing gold mines operate on ore in the low single digits of g/t, so one sample showing tens of grams per tonne can look spectacular. But the number alone means little until you know what kind of sample produced it.

There are a few main types. A grab sample is a single piece of rock picked from surface, usually chosen because it looks mineralized. A channel or chip sample cuts a continuous line across an exposure. A drill sample pulls core from below ground. Grab samples are the least representative by design. They're selected from the best-looking material, so one high grab result tells you gold is present somewhere, not that it's spread across a property.

That's why the honest phrase in good disclosure is that selective samples "are not necessarily representative." It isn't box-ticking. It's the whole difference between a promising sign and a proven deposit, and the only way to close that gap is systematic sampling and, eventually, drilling.

If you follow junior mining, this single habit, always asking what kind of sample produced a number, will make you a sharper reader of every news release you see.
