Project Watershed

Project Watershed, with the help of the K'ómoks Guardians installed a new Canada goose exclusion fence at Kus-kus-sum last week. The fence is designed to keep Canada geese out while allowing fish to continue to pass through. The fence is planned to remain in place for 2-3 years to allow the newly planted tidal marsh plants time to mature without the pressure from goose grazing.

Join us in stewarding the Kus-kus-sum restoration site this week! Activities will include invasive species removal, mulching, and other hands-on work to support native plant growth and help the ecosystem thrive. No experience is needed.

This is a great opportunity learn to practical skills to understand, monitor, and care for freshwater streams. This hands-on 2½-day Streamkeepers Course was developed by the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation and is taught by biologist Michele Jones.

Did you know that eelgrass beds are one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet? These underwater meadows:

🐟 provide vital habitat for juvenile fish,
🌊 filter coastal waters, and
🌲 store vast amounts of carbon.

Yet eelgrass is declining in the Salish Sea. We’re working hard to understand why, and to help bring it back.

These images are from some recent mapping work we did of Baynes Sound. We are using drones to create high resolution maps of the Baynes Sound shoreline at low tide. We also used towed underwater video to examine habitat in areas too deep for the drone to view through the water.

This work will be used to inform future restoration projects and direct conservation efforts for eelgrass in Baynes Sound. 🌱

📣 Volunteers needed at Family Watershed Day! Can you help? 📣

On Saturday, September 19th we will be celebrating the watersheds and waterways that connect us all in the Comox Valley with other members of the conservation community 💚

We need one or two volunteers to help out at our booth on the afternoon shift, sharing information about community water monitoring and Project Watershed's other work, and facilitating estuary-themed games with kids - all while looking out over the beautiful Puntledge River!

Want to support your local watershed? The Community Water Monitoring Initiative is getting ready for fall flush monitoring.

Join us for one of two training sessions to learn about the program, field protocols, and how to use the monitoring equipment. All equipment and materials are provided.

Note: Returning volunteers who attended a summer 2026 training session do not need to attend a fall session, but are welcome to join us for a refresher!
