🐴 Part 3 – So… How Is Allie Doing?
It’s now been 3 weeks since Allie’s SI injections and significant changes to her hind shoeing, and so far, she’s doing great!
She’s been back in work for about a week and a half with no lameness, gradually returning to her normal routine. 🤞
We’re continuing her stretching and strengthening program and have also added Adequan for some extra joint support.
Now, time will tell us a lot. If six months from now we start noticing those same little off steps again, it may indicate that the SI injections are something she benefits from periodically. Or, hopefully, improving and maintaining her hind-foot angles — along with Adequan — will help keep her comfortable long-term.
One other takeaway from this experience: don’t be afraid to load up and visit an equine-only facility.
It can sound like an expensive undertaking, but honestly, it wasn’t nearly as costly as I expected. Having access to vets who work exclusively with horses, the lameness locator, imaging and another set of eyes gave us a lot of information in one appointment. Sometimes a complicated lameness just benefits from different tools and a fresh perspective.
After months of questioning those little off steps, I’m pretty happy to say:
Allie is comfortable, back to work and currently sound. ❤️🐴
Hopefully the next update is simply… still sound. 🤞

🐴 Part 2 – Looking at the Whole Horse
One of the biggest lessons from Allie’s appointment was that horses are rarely as straightforward as they seem.
Over the last several months, both our veterinarian in Cranbrook and I consistently saw what appeared to be right hind lameness. Everything about her way of going seemed to point in that direction.
That’s why I was so surprised when we took her to Burwash.
Using the lameness locator and a full examination, her right side actually looked very good. Instead, the only side showing measurable lameness was the left.
When findings like that don’t match what you’ve been seeing, it can suggest that the horse has been compensating. In some cases, bilateral hind limb compensation can make the SI (sacroiliac region) a consideration, so after her examination, our veterinarian recommended treating the SI with injections.
That wasn’t the only piece of the puzzle, though.
We also reviewed radiographs of her hind feet. Her palmar angles were on the lower end of ideal, so we decided to be proactive and fit 3° wedge pads to improve her hoof mechanics and provide better heel support.
Could her hind feet have contributed to extra strain through her pelvis and SI? It’s certainly possible.
Was the SI the original problem? We don’t know.
What we do know is that by treating the sore SI while also improving her hoof mechanics, we’re giving her the best opportunity to move comfortably and hopefully prevent compensation patterns from continuing.
One thing this journey has taught me is that rehabilitation isn’t always about finding one single cause. Sometimes it’s about identifying all the factors that may be contributing and addressing each one.
Now comes the most important part—rehabilitation, patience, and seeing how she responds over the coming weeks.

Part 1 – Behind the Scenes at Burwash Equine Services 🐴
One thing we’ve been asked for recently is to share more of what goes on behind the scenes with our horses. So here’s the first of a little series from our trip to Burwash Equine Services yesterday.
We loaded up Scooter and Allie for a day of soundness evaluations—but they were there for very different reasons.
Allie has had an intermittent hind-end lameness that we’ve been investigating since this spring. Some days she looks completely normal, while other days she’ll take a few uneven steps before moving out comfortably. Those subtle cases are often the hardest to diagnose, so we wanted to gather as much information as possible before making any decisions.
Scooter, on the other hand, was there for a follow-up before increasing his conditioning. In 2023, he was diagnosed with a right hind proximal suspensory ligament injury and lower hock arthritis. After a long rehabilitation, careful conditioning, and ongoing management, we wanted to make sure everything was still holding up before asking more of him.
One of the coolest tools we used yesterday was the Lameness Locator.
This system uses motion sensors placed on the horse to measure tiny differences in the way they move—differences that are often impossible to detect with the human eye alone. It doesn’t replace a veterinarian’s examination, but it provides objective data that helps guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.
As horse owners, it’s easy to focus on what we think we see. Technology like this helps remove some of the guesswork and gives us another piece of the puzzle.
We’re incredibly grateful to have access to a veterinary team that takes the time to investigate thoroughly rather than simply treating symptoms.
Stay tuned for part 2….

Why is our ground beef price increasing?
We believe our customers deserve to know where their food comes from—and what it actually costs to produce.
One of our most recent burger cows came from right here in the Creston Valley. While she wasn’t raised on our ranch from birth, she came from a local producer who shares many of the same values we do when it comes to animal care, quality feed, and responsible stewardship.
We also track every burger cow individually. We record purchase price, harvest and processing costs, meat yields, packaging weights, and whether each animal makes a profit or a loss. Our pricing decisions are based on real numbers—not guesswork.
Our latest burger cow:
🐂 1,825 lbs live
🥩 906 lbs hanging
Costs:
• Purchase: $4,197.50
• Harvest & processing: $2,027.84
Total investment: $6,225.34
From this animal we packaged 447.33 lbs of ground beef, along with jerky and other products.
Even after factoring in an estimated batch of jerky, this cow is projected to finish about $650 short of covering its costs, before considering the many hours spent sourcing cattle, transporting them, marketing, deliveries, freezer storage, and running the business.
Why not sell steaks?
Not every animal is suited to premium steaks. Rather than selling cuts that don’t meet our standards, we choose to turn those animals into high-quality ground beef and jerky. We’d rather stand behind every package we sell than offer something we’re not completely confident in.
While our processing costs have remained relatively stable, quality local cattle continue to command strong prices. To continue supporting local producers and providing the quality beef you’ve come to expect, the new packages coming out of the freezer from this cow will be priced at:
🐂 $13/lb
Any ground beef already in our freezers will remain at its current price. Only packages from this animal will reflect the new pricing.
Thank you for supporting local agriculture, local processing, and family ranches like ours. We truly appreciate every one of you.

Meet Stetson. ❤️
We bought Stetson as a weanling, and somehow he’s already 6 years old. Time has a way of getting away from you.
Life, the ranch, kids, lessons, and horses needing more urgent attention meant he was started, but never really got the time he deserved to continue his education.
This year, that’s changing.
Right now we’re going right back to the basics—not because he isn’t ridable, but because we want to build him correctly. Instead of pulling himself along with his head and shoulders, we’re teaching him to truly use his body.
The goal is for him to:
🐴 Lift through his back.
🐴 Step underneath himself with his hind legs.
🐴 Push from his hindquarters instead of pulling with his front end.
🐴 Find balance within his body at the walk, trot, and lope.
It’s not about making him look “pretty” with his head down. It’s about creating strength, balance, and correct biomechanics that will help keep him sound and make every job easier in the future.
He’s a kind horse with a great mind and work ethic, and it’s been rewarding watching him start to figure out how to carry himself.
Here’s to taking the time they deserve—even if it’s a few years later than originally planned. 💙
