On this day in 1906, the Village of Didsbury became a town, to be henceforth known as the Town of Didsbury, and that George B. Sexsmith of Didsbury, be named as the Returning Officer for the holding of the first election for mayor and councillors for the said town.

Thanks to the Provincial Archives of Alberta for assisting on this matter.

Prior to the RCMP being established in Didsbury, the town had a hired constable who was responsible for maintaining law and order within town limits. We are not sure when it began, but prior to finding this gem from 1918 when William Pear was sworn in, we only knew that it started at least by 1924 because there was an advertisement in the newspaper for the position.

Prior to that arrangement, police protection was by the Royal Northwest Mounted Police stationed in Olds (established 1890, and servicing Didsbury by 1893).

As early as 1945, we have record that the town council was interested in having the RCMP take over town policing.
Negotiations finally resulted in an agreement beginning April 1, 1967.

We are really enjoying diving way, WAY back in the archives as we approach our 50th Anniversary of the Didsbury and District Historical Society!

Museum volunteers are out and about selling raffle tickets for locally sourced gift baskets! We also have raffle tickets at the museum. Please help support the Didsbury Museum Preservation Project. There are many things that need attention at the museum, but of particular urgency is the growing hole in the roof of this nearly 120 year old building.

THREE GENERATIONS OF WEDDINGS
Our Homestead Room has a fabulous display of wedding dresses, and the stories behind the stitches. Three generations of family history, told through the wedding gowns of Lennie Hooper (1915), her daughter Eveline Quantz (1944), and her granddaughter, Bev From (1975). Remarkably, the two oldest gowns were handmade on the exact same treadle Singer sewing machine! Come see this terrific exhibit any time - the Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am - 4 pm.
