Digby Area Healthcare Engagement (DAHE) had a busy and exciting summer filled with opportunities to welcome, connect with, and show appreciation for healthcare professionals and students in our community.

We were pleased to welcome 7 Canadian medical students to the Digby area this summer. Most of them are studying abroad in Ireland. Their time here gave them an opportunity to learn more about our healthcare services and experience what life is like in our area. Along the way, they enjoyed some of the many things Digby has to offer, including whale watching and other local activities/events.

We also had the pleasure of bringing a few of the medical students together with local physicians at the Richard Ellis Memorial Golf Tournament, providing a great opportunity to connect, build relationships, and enjoy some time together outside of the healthcare setting.

DAHE was also happy to support our local healthcare teams by sponsoring a sweet treat at two Digby General Hospital staff BBQs—a small way of saying thank you for the dedication and hard work of our healthcare professionals.

We continued our appreciation efforts with an ice cream party for the staff at Tideview Terrace, giving everyone an opportunity to take a break, enjoy a treat, and feel appreciated for the important work they do.

As we looked toward the future of healthcare in our community, we celebrated the graduating medical residents, while also welcoming and getting to know the new incoming residents. Building these relationships early is an important part of encouraging future healthcare professionals to consider returning to the Digby area.

One of the highlights of the summer was our Healthcare Summer Social, held in partnership with Digby-Clare Home Support. Healthcare staff and their families enjoyed an evening of fun, food, and entertainment. Time to connect and enjoy one another’s company.

To wrap up the summer, DAHE prepared small care packages for local students heading off or returning to school in healthcare programs. It was our way of wishing them well and reminding them that their home community is cheering them on.

From welcoming future healthcare professionals to connecting with current providers and showing appreciation for our local healthcare teams, it was certainly a busy summer for DAHE—and one filled with many great connections and memories.

The DNS Medical Student Bursary Program provides bursaries for Dalhousie Medical School students in Halifax and Sydney, and francophone Nova Scotian students studying medicine at Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick and Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec.

There are EIGHT $5,000 bursaries available for med students. Students in any year of study may apply for this support to help fund their medical education and associated expenses. Doctors Nova Scotia is committed to supporting diversity and inclusion within the medical community.

All recipients will be selected based on need, community involvement and dedication to the medical field. Students from equity-deserving communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
