Chief Warren Driechel and Police Operations Chief Devin Laforce recently joined Ryan Jespersen for a conversation about public safety in Edmonton’s downtown.
They discussed the realities facing the downtown community, the work of EPS members and the importance of coordinated action among police, businesses, community organizations, governments and social-service partners.
Thank you to Jenny Adams and the Downtown Revitalization Coalition for helping facilitate an important conversation about supporting the people who live, work and visit downtown.
Building a Safer Edmonton requires input from the community, while working together on sustainable solutions.

Edmonton Police Service joins 30 Forward Pledge: Today, Oct. 7, 2026, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) signed
the 30 Forward Pledge, a national initiative dedicated to building a more inclusive future that focuses on recruiting and
retaining women in the Service’s ranks.
“Our sworn police service is currently made up of about 22% women, representing almost all ranks within the organization, right up to Deputy Chief,” says Chief Warren Driechel. “I signed the 30 Forward Pledge today to show my commitment, and that of our service, to increasing this number beyond 30%, with the future vision of seeing many more of those women advance to positions of leadership throughout their careers with us.”
Gender diversity in policing brings a broader range of perspectives and experiences, enriches the information and ideas available within police services, and ultimately supports more effective, innovative and inclusive decision-making.
Over the past five years, the EPS has maintained an average of about 23% women in its ranks. The 30 Forward Pledge not only reaffirms the Service’s commitment to recruiting more women, but also aims to identify and address any cultural or systemic barriers that could affect the promotion and retention of women within the organization.
The Edmonton Police Service is one of several police organizations across the country committing to the 30 Forward Pledge.

Today we remember PSD Quanto. On October 7, 2013, Quanto was stabbed while attempting to apprehend a suspect who had been involved in a vehicle pursuit. We will never forget Quanto’s sacrifice.
His passing inspired Quanto’s Law, an amendment to the Criminal Code to better protect law enforcement animals, military animals and service animals and to ensure that offenders who harm those animals or assault peace officers are held accountable.
Building a Safer Edmonton means evolving how we respond.
HELP teams are taking a more visible, frontline-focused approach to address social disorder, support Patrol and help de-escalate situations that impact public safety.
By shifting from case management to a more responsive field model, EPS is aligning HELP resources where they are needed most.
When appropriate, HELP teams will provide a warm handoff, connecting individuals with community and service supports that can help meet their needs.

Police lay charges in south Edmonton fire: The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 29-year-old man in relation to a southwest Edmonton arson that took place in late June.
On June 25, 2026, EPS Southwest Branch patrol officers were contacted by Edmonton Fire Rescue Service (EFRS) regarding a deliberately set fire at a building in the area of 82 Avenue and Gateway Blvd. Investigators have since determined that two fires were set at this location between 7:40 p.m. and 9:45 p.m., with the second fire causing extensive damage to the structure. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no neighbouring structures were impacted.
Following a review of area video, footage was captured of an unknown male around the time of both fires and police issued a media release with the hope that someone may recognize him. The man has since been successfully identified as Narayan Bergstrom, 29, and on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, he was charged with two counts of arson.
Police are not searching for any other suspects and would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance with this investigation. No further charges are expected at this time.
