Are you ready to get down at the polka party? You should be because we have .folk to get the night started.

Kalberta is a Polish Highlander folk band formed in 2020 between 4 of the group members: husband and wife, Angela and Ted, as well as brother and sister, Marzena and Paweł. Their most recent addition, Maciej (Marzena’s husband) has joined them from Mississauga, where he played in a band of his own.

Back in 2020, the members had been asked to play at a Polish Highlander event in Nakiska, organized by the Calgary branch. Pawel, Angela and Ted played, while Marzena assisted in vocals. After this, they decided that it would be exciting to form a band where they could continue to promote their Polish culture, whilst having fun doing so. Marzena was taught how to play the cello when they returned home that day - and the rest is history!

Each one of them has a music background that stems from their youngest years. Some of their parents immigrated to Canada many years ago, and left behind their families but continue to uphold their Polish traditions wherever they go. As the next generation of Polish Highlanders in Canada, the members of Kalberta are proud to be the first - and only - Polish Highlander folk band in Alberta.

GET TO KNOW OUR INSTRUCTORS:

She is the most caring and amazing human being to step foot in your life, please welcome Krysia Kovach, aka Kik!

Krysia joined the school in 1986 as a six year-old dancer. At the age of 12, she started teaching as an assistant instructor with klasa 1.

Throughout the years, she taught all the different classes and age groups and had the
pleasure of teaching with many capable instructors under the direction of her mother, Pani Bozena Langtry. Krysia travelled to Poland for four summers to obtain her diploma in Polish Folk choreography. She participated in eight Polish folk dance festivals in Rzeszow, Poland with the Polish Dance Ensemble SPK Iskry as a dancer and then later as the artistic director and choreographer along with her brother, Robert Langtry. In 2020, Pani Bozena Langtry retired as artistic director and choreographer of the Polish School of Dance SPK Iskry after 46 dedicated years and passed the torch to Krysia.

She also continues to dance with the Hungarian Kapisztran dancers since 2003. Krysia has served as the Entertainment chair for the Polish pavilion for 12 years, has served on the Polish Combatants Association Branch #13 executives in a variety of roles, including president and is currently on the board.

Krysia has 12 year old twins, Halina and Bence, who are part of the Polish School of Dance SPK Iskry and the Hungarian Kapisztran dancers. Krysia is very passionate about folklore and deems it as one of the most important parts of her life, which has inspired life lasting memories, bonds, trips, festivals, and relationships, shared with her family and friends from Winnipeg and around the world.

💛🍯 we can’t for you all to experience and meet all 3 instructors 🍯💛

Pan primas himself, please welcome Robert Langtry!

Robert Langtry was formerly the Assistant Artistic Director & Choreographer of the Polish Dance Ensemble SPK Iskry and enjoyed being a dancer in the ensemble for 15 years.

Bloodlines definitely are strong as he is the grandson of the late Henryk Lorenc, the founder of the ensemble, as well as son of Bożena Langtry, who was formerly Artistic director of the Ensemble as well as the founder of the Polish School of Dance SPK Iskry. Robert is former President of the Polish Dance Ensemble SPK Iskry and has held other positions on the executive in the past.

His Polish dance training began at the age of 6 when he joined the Polish School of Dance SPK Iskry. Robert has attended Polish dance workshops and participated in 7 Polish dance festivals in Rzeszow, Poland.

The love of culture and dance is not restricted to his Polish heritage. Robert also dances for and is the Artistic Director of the Hungarian Dance Ensemble Kapisztran of Winnipeg. Robert is the founder and lead violinist of the Eastern European folk band Czerwona Rzeka from Winnipeg.

GET TO KNOW OUR WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS:

She’s tiny but she’s MIGHTY, please welcome Joasia Langtry.

Joasia Langtry has loved performing since she was 5 years old. After seeing Polish Folk Dance Ensemble SPK Iskry perform at Winnipeg’s 2-week long Folklorama festival, she eagerly joined the Polish School of Dance SPK Iskry in 1993. She danced with the school until she was eligible to enter the senior ensemble in 2004. She danced for 14 years with the senior ensemble, attending 6 Rzeszow Poland festivals. This is where Joasia formed strong international friendships that eventually led to ZPiT Miodula being formed. Joasia had the honour of performing with those close friends at the Rzeszow festival in 2019.

Joasia has been an instructor and choreographer for the Polish School of Dance SPK Iskry for over 20 years. She continues to grow and expand on her dancing skills by joining and continuing her dancing career with the Hungarian Folk Dance Ensemble Kapisztran since 2008. In addition to dance, Joasia is a singer in the folk band Czerwona Rzeka. Joasia has a deep love and commitment to folklore as it is the path that allowed her to pursue her passions while nurturing lifelong friendships.
