Pastoral Letter on the Alberta Referendum

The Catholic Bishops of Alberta, including Bishop David, have issued a pastoral letter ahead of Alberta’s October 19, 2026 referendum.

The letter encourages Catholics to approach their civic responsibility with prayer, an informed conscience, and concern for the common good, reflecting on human dignity, care for vulnerable people, solidarity, reconciliation, and respectful dialogue.
It also reminds the faithful that Catholics may reach different practical judgments while remaining united in their responsibility to seek what is just and good for their neighbours.

During the three-day training in Lviv, the participants had the opportunity to meet and speak with Bishop Andrii Khimiak, Auxiliary Bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and Deputy Head of the Pastoral Council of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC.

The Bishop personally joined the participants, spoke with them, and answered their questions.

They discussed why ministry to young people is an investment in the future of the Church, the importance of vibrant youth communities, vocations, and creating an environment where young people can hear God’s voice and discern their path.

The Bishop also emphasized the role of youth commissions in creating such environments. Ministry to young people is not only about organizing meetings or events, but above all about being present alongside young people, being ready to listen to them, seek answers together, and help them grow.

They also discussed the challenges facing youth communities today, accompanying vocations to the priesthood, religious life, and consecrated life, as well as the need to create spaces where young people can remain active in the Church at different stages of their lives.
“A youth community should be a place where a person can hear God’s voice.”

The formation training was not only an opportunity to gain new knowledge but also a space for encounter, shared discernment, and planning further ministry to young people in the eparchies.
Because serving young people means building the future of the Church together with them
