Unpopular opinion: the cheapest website is usually the most expensive one you'll ever buy.

A prospect once told me my quote was too high. Someone else would build the same site for a third of the price.

I told them to take the other quote.

Not reverse psychology — I meant it. If a website is just a box to tick, the cheap one is the right call. Genuinely.

The trouble starts when the website is supposed to do something. Bring in leads. Take bookings. Make the phone ring.

A cheap site and a working site aren't the same thing at different price points. They're two different objects. One is a brochure someone typed up. The other is built around a question — who's landing here, and what do I need them to do next?

You can't add that question in later. It's the thing everything else hangs off.

So they went with the cheaper quote. The other developer got halfway in, then ghosted them mid-build. Half a website, no one to finish it, further behind than the day they started.

"Does my website data have to stay in Canada?"

We get asked this on almost every hosting call — and the honest answer surprises people: PIPEDA doesn't actually require it.

What it does require is accountability. You're on the hook for protecting your customers' data no matter which country the server sits in.

But there are real cases where Canadian hosting matters:

→ BC and Nova Scotia have public-sector rules that restrict data leaving Canada
→ Quebec's Law 25 means extra paperwork for any transfer out of province
→ Lots of procurement teams simply require it in the contract

And the part nobody says out loud: data on US servers is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. For a brochure site, that doesn't matter much. For a clinic's intake forms or a nonprofit's donor database? Your clients care. A lot.

Think of it like the "Made in Canada" label — not always required, frequently the reason someone picks you. (Bonus: hosting closer to your customers is free speed, and Google measures speed.)
