There is a recent shift in shows trying to make characters less misogynistic and unknowingly adding more misogyny into the storyline (Sokka from Netflix's Avatar, I'm looking at you).

It took me back to the last well written annoying character in a show I loved. The character of Barney from 'How I Met Your Mother' is misogynistic, a womanizer, a liar and quite lame honestly. His bad behavior makes perfect sense when you know about his past. He is not aspirational, his 'coolness' is never glorified, he's sad and pathetic. A good character doesn't have to be noble and flawless, it has to be understandable, realistic and relatable.

Barney's character arc is about coming to terms with how he loves his life, but he doesn't like living it. He takes a long and slow path to progress, regressing at times too but eventually becoming a more well rounded person. This is a tribute to Barney, maybe in the future I'll gather my thoughts on the other characters and the ending of the show. If you know which scene this is from, do drop a comment to let me know.
