Building Hope
We reach out to the people of Beverly & surrounding communities in NE Edmonton with hope and help.
Building Hope is a Nazarene Compassionate Ministry Center serving the Greater Edmonton Area. Building Hope started with a location in the Beverly area in 2000 providing hot meals, drop-in activities and a clothing and food bank to families in need. Building Hope expanded to a second location in Sherwood Park in 2013 and that location offers a variety of counseling services. Building Hope serves to fulfill a simple mission “In the Name of Jesus, we will love”

It is often harder to give kindness and compassion to ourselves than to others But that is what is - when we approach ourselves with the same kindness that we give to others. When we're hurting, we need to be cared for as much as others do when they're hurting. When times are hard or we make mistakes, we must accept ourselves rather than being hard on ourselves.
A big part of self-compassion is recognizing that we're all human, and none of us are perfect. And mostly, that we're not alone. When we do this and step back to examine our feelings rather than getting overwhelmed by them, we are showing ourselves self-compassion.

A new season can bring new pressures. For more and more families, September means asking for an emergency food hamper to help make ends meet. At Building Hope Edmonton, we’re seeing that need firsthand, and we’re grateful for the people who help make sure families have food on the table. Your support helps hope show up when it’s needed most.

Ricky is an average young guy who came to see what was happening at Building Hope and never left. He comes every day we're open to clean, stands with a mop and broom patiently while people eat, ready to clean a table or mess on the floor, all of this after he's checked the bathrooms, emptied the garbage, and helped to carry in food from the food bank run.
Ricky just wanted to find a place where he could help, where he was needed.
If you're a "Ricky," send us a message or come down to check things out when our doors are open, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We would love to have more Rickys!!!

What are the mental health impacts of compassion? Compelling evidence says that interacting compassionately with others, both in giving and receiving, and allowing ourselves to experience self-compassion benefits our health.
Research says practicing compassion impacts our mood, potentially lifting feelings of depression. Receiving it from others releases oxytocin and a . It can literally shift our thinking towards optimism.
There's also what could be called a "pay it forward" effect when we help others.
What mental health effects have you seen from showing compassion to others?
