Every sport demands something different from your body. And if you are training with a program that was built for someone else's sport you are building strength that may never transfer into what you actually do.
Horse riding is one of the most physically unique sports there is. You need to stabilize while you move. Translate load from one side of your body to the other. Stay supple enough to follow the horse and strong enough to hold your position when things get unpredictable.
A generic gym program does not train for that. A CrossFit class does not train for that. Even a solid Pilates practice on its own may not be enough.
I spent years doing general fitness programs and supplementing them with extra exercises because I could feel the gap. Something was always missing. It was not until I started asking what does the rider's body actually need that everything changed. That question became the foundation of Swish Fitness.
Sport specific training is not a luxury. It is the difference between getting stronger in ways that show up in the saddle and getting stronger in ways that never quite translate.
Your horse trains specifically for their job. You deserve the same.
Save this if you needed the reminder. Share it with a rider who is still trying to make a general program work.
Do this exercise to:
✅ Improve your independent leg strength
✅ Improve your glute and hip strength
✅ Decreased tightness in your hip flexors
✅ Strengthen your core and your abductors (inner thigh)
It will help you:
➡️ Get your inner leg strong so you can keep your leg on your horse
➡️ Be able to hold your pelvis level and keep your seat in the saddle when you want to
➡️ Improve your ability to load your stirrups solidly
⭐️Save this exercise! Or share with someone who needs it.

Balance isn't just about standing on one leg. It's a complex system involving proprioception—your body's ability to sense where it is in space and communicate that back to your brain. Your vestibular system, your eyes, your inner ear, your cerebellum—they're all working together constantly. When one piece isn't functioning well, everything else has to compensate. That's why a rider with poor ankle proprioception might develop knee issues, or why a neck injury can throw off your whole sense of balance. Understanding this matters because it changes how you train. You can't just strengthen the big muscles and expect balance to follow. You have to build awareness, stability, and the foundational connections that let all these systems talk to each other. When you're in the saddle, your horse feels all of it.
Your horse doesn't need the fancy stuff.
What your horse needs is simple. Care. Kindness. Safety. The basics done well.
My dad taught me this early on. He had a gift for taking complex ideas and breaking them down into ABC. He could simplify anything, and when he did, everything changed. The horses performed better. The people performed better. The whole barn shifted.
We overcomplicate things. We add layers and techniques and equipment, thinking more is better. Sometimes the fancy stuff is for us, and there's nothing wrong with that. But let's be honest about what it is.
If you're really caring for your horse, strip it back. Meet their needs. Be kind. Take care of them.
That's it. That's the foundation everything else sits on.
The horse is going to do what the horse is going to do. Your job is to have the strength to communicate clearly without overstraining yourself in the process.
That's one reason why off-horse training matters so much. When you fall, muscle tissue and bone density aren't just about looking strong. They're about what your body can actually absorb. Good tensile tissue and solid bone mass give you something to work with against impact. Frail tissue doesn't.
You won't prevent every injury. But you can build a body that's resilient enough to take what riding demands.
The foundation work feels boring. Until it's the difference between a fracture and walking away.
Comment CORE and I'll send you the Ride Strong Core training system.
Most people think balance is about standing on one leg without wobbling.
It is so much more than that.
Your balance is a conversation happening inside your body every single second. Your proprioception is telling your brain where your limbs are in space. Your vestibular system is managing your orientation. Your eyes are feeding spatial data. Your core is stabilizing. Your cervical spine is relaying information. Your cerebellum is coordinating all of it simultaneously.
And here is what most people miss. When one piece gets disrupted the whole system shifts. I see this constantly in my clinic. Someone sprains an ankle and suddenly their balance on the horse is off. Someone has a neck injury and they start bumping into things or feeling unsteady in the saddle in ways that mimic a concussion. It is not weakness. It is a neurological disruption in a system that was designed to work as a unit.
This is why I am so particular about how I train riders and women through Swish Fitness. You cannot just strengthen muscles in isolation and expect your balance to improve. You have to train the communication between all of these systems. That means building your core in a way that actually integrates with how your body processes movement. That means challenging your proprioception progressively so your body learns to adapt and respond rather than just hold still.
When you train balance as a system your body starts responding differently. On the horse you stay centered through spooks and transitions. Off the horse you move through your day with more confidence and less pain. It all ties together.
This is the work that gets overlooked because it does not look flashy. But it is the work that changes everything.
Save this if it shifted how you think about balance. And if you want to start training your body the way it was actually designed to work, comment the word Core and I will send you a way to get started for just 27 dollars.
Get even better at stabilizing your upper body and holding your shoulders in a nice position on your horse.
This exercise helps you:
✔️ strengthen your shoulder blades
✔️ stretch your pectoralis major to help you hold your shoulders back
✔️ challenge your core when you make it active through the body
✔️ help helps with independent leg strength by doing the exercise in a split stance
All you need is a band, but if you don’t have a band, you could do this with some light weights instead.
And if you don’t have light weights, grab some soup cans or something like that!
