Once again, we are beyond disappointed.

The washroom at Leda Lake Park has been open for 9 days. Nine. Days.

And already we are cleaning up a smashed liquor bottle, broken glass and garbage inside it.

Really?

This washroom was four years in the making and cost more than $30,000 to put there.

The zip line was another $50,000 investment.

These are NOT cheap projects. They take years of planning, budgeting, grant writing, fundraising, meetings, approvals and hundreds of volunteer hours to make happen.

And we have the funding available to invest another $100,000 into this park, including plans for a new playground.

But after nine days, we are already being forced to ask ourselves:

Why would we?

Why would we continue investing this kind of money into public spaces if people are going to treat them with this level of disregard?

Why would volunteers continue giving up evenings, weekends and time with their own families to make these projects happen?

WE ARE VOLUNTEERS.

Many of the people behind these projects are doing this around their jobs, businesses, children, grandchildren and every other competing priority in their lives. They do it because they care about this community.

We know the people doing this are NOT the majority. But this is now the second post in one month we have had to make about vandalism or abuse of community property.

We need everyone on board.

If you see something, say something.

We are offering a $400 CASH REWARD for information that leads to identifying the person or people responsible for vandalizing our community spaces.

We don’t care how old or young you are. If you know something, email [email protected]. You will be kept anonymous.

And yes, the washroom can be locked and made unusable.

Then we can all simply look at our $30,000 washroom building sitting there as we turn around at the boat land wish people had enough basic decency not to smash liquor bottles inside it.

Nine days.

That is how long it took.

We want the washroom open. We want the playground. We want to invest the next $100,000.

But we need our community to help protect what we are working so hard to build.

Todays hours 12-5

Autumn is settling in, the days are getting shorter, and we’re slowly trading bare feet, beach days and sandy towels for fuzzy socks, warm blankets and cozy nights at home. 🍂

And if we’re going to start hibernating, we might as well have something good to do!
