Three small things that help in the first weeks of school.
Quiet time after school. No questions, no debrief, no homework for the first half hour. Let the tank refill before you ask anything of them.
One predictable thing each morning. Same breakfast, same song, same order of getting ready. One fixed point makes the rest of the change easier to carry.
Naming the hard part out loud together. "Transitions are tough for you right now" lands better than "you'll be fine."
None of these fix September. They make it more manageable while your child finds their footing.

By the time your child walks out of school at the end of the day, they have already done more work than the timetable shows.
Reading the room. Copying what everyone else is doing. Filtering out the hallway noise. Switching tasks on someone else's schedule. Holding a question in because asking it feels risky.
This is called masking, which means covering up how much effort something is taking so you look like everyone else. It works, and it is exhausting.
If your child is flat, irritable, or wiped out after school, this is often why.
We support neurodivergent kids and their families in Fort Saskatchewan and area, and across Alberta online.

Parents often start a conversation with us by apologising. "I know I'm probably overreacting, but..."
You are not overreacting. You have watched this child every day of their life. When something shifts, you notice it before anyone else does.
Maybe homework takes three hours. Maybe they say they are stupid. Maybe the morning routine has become a fight. You do not need a diagnosis or a teacher's referral to ask a question about it.
Trust the instinct. Ask the question. We are happy to talk it through with you first.

September asks a lot of kids. New building, new teacher, new seating plan, new noise. For a neurodivergent child, every one of those changes costs energy before the school day even starts.
Then they come home and fall apart.
Parents often tell us they feel confused by this. School says everything is fine. Home tells a different story. Both are true. Your child held it together all day and let go where they felt safest.
Give it six weeks. Most kids find their footing by mid-October. If things are still hard after that, it is worth looking at what is getting in the way.
We work with families across Fort Saskatchewan and area in person, and with clients across Alberta online. If this sounds like your September, we'd love to connect.

Save this one for when you need it - or share it with someone who's been quietly carrying someone else's hard time.
Knowing what to say is hard. These four things are a place to start.

When someone we love is going through a hard time, it can be tempting to jump into problem-solving mode. But often what helps most is simpler - and harder - than that.
These three things won't fix everything, but they go a long way.

New on the blog - this one is for anyone who has been worried about someone and hasn't known what to say or do.
We cover what actually helps, what tends to backfire even when it comes from a good place, and how to bring up the idea of getting support without it feeling like pressure.
