Tryout season creates pressure to move quickly. Parents compare clubs, players compare teammates, and a higher division can start to feel like the obvious next step.
But the best decision isn’t always the most impressive one.
Before changing teams, ask:
⚽ Are we leaving because this environment is limiting development—or because competition has become uncomfortable?
⚽ Do we understand the coaching, training environment and pathway at the new club?
⚽ What does our player genuinely need next: more minutes, better coaching, greater competition, more responsibility or more time with the ball?
Sometimes leaving is the right decision. Sometimes staying and overcoming the challenge is exactly what a player needs.
The mistake is assuming that a bigger badge, higher division or more successful team automatically guarantees better development.
The best team is the one that gives your child the best opportunity to become a better player.
Save this before making your tryout decision and share it with another player or parent who needs to consider these questions.

It’s that time of the year again. Another summer season has come to an end and most players and parents start to think about how they will approach next season.
Before making any decisions ask your self these 3 questions:
1. ARE YOU RUNNING AWAY FROM SOMETHING?
Let’s face it, if you’re considering changing teams it’s usually a result of playing time.
Before leaving, ask yourself:
“Is this environment actually holding me back… or is it challenging me to grow?”
Because changing teams every time things get uncomfortable can teach you to escape competition instead of learning how to overcome it.
2. WHY DO YOU WANT TO MOVE TO THAT CLUB?
A bigger club doesn’t automatically mean a better environment.
You need to find out:
Who is actually going to coach me?
What will training look like?
Will I be challenged?
Is there a real pathway for me?
You should look for a team that facilitate your development. At a youth level (8-13) you’re better off getting consistent minutes on a decent team than riding the bench on good team.
3. WHAT DOES YOUR CHILD ACTUALLY NEED NEXT?
Not what their teammate is doing.
Not what another parent told you.
Not what looks impressive on Instagram.
What does your player need?
More minutes? Better coaching? More competition? More responsibility? A different position? More time on the ball?
The answer is not black or white but a good approach to youth development starts by asking the right questions.
The best team isn’t always the highest-level team that will take you.
It’s the environment that gives you the best opportunity to become a better player.
TRYOUT SEASON ISN’T JUST ABOUT WHO PICKS YOUR CHILD.
It’s also about who you choose, And sometimes the best decision is to leave. Sometimes the best decision is to stay.
The mistake is assuming that a new badge, higher division or a more successful team automatically equals better development.
