🔥 OPEN BURNING UPDATE – AREA D 🔥

With Category 2 open fires now permitted, residents may begin to see some larger outdoor burns taking place throughout RDKB Area D.

Category 1 campfires have already been permitted in the region for some time, and the lifting of Category 2 restrictions allows additional types of open burning to resume.

As seasonal burning activity increases, seeing smoke or a permitted burn does not necessarily mean there is an emergency.

However, if you see a fire that appears to be out of control, spreading beyond its intended area, or posing a threat to people or property, report it immediately by calling 9-1-1.

Anyone conducting an open burn remains responsible for keeping their fire under control, having appropriate suppression equipment available, monitoring conditions, and ensuring the fire is fully extinguished.

Please burn responsibly and help keep our community safe.

🔥 INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THIS TEAM! 🔥

Last Wednesday, after an incredibly busy August, we took a much-needed break from training and operations to simply spend some time together as a team.

We had the opportunity to say goodbye and thank a couple of our longtime, outstanding members for everything they have contributed to Grand Forks Fire Rescue — and then enjoy a great evening together with some laughs, friendly competition, and a trivia night.

Nights like that are important. We train hard, we respond together, and when the call comes in, we rely on each other.

Last night was another example of exactly why I am so proud of this team. Everyone stepped up, knew their roles, worked together, and got the job done.

The training is paying off. The teamwork is showing.

Keep training. Keep supporting each other. Keep doing what you’re doing.

I couldn’t be prouder to be your Fire Chief.

Outstanding work, GFFR! 🚒🔥

PUBLIC INFORMATION REQUEST – HARDY MOUNTAIN FIRES

Last night and early this morning, Grand Forks Fire Rescue responded to three separate wildfires on Hardy Mountain. The first two incidents were reported through 911 at approximately 9:00 p.m. and the third around 2:00 a.m.

The first two fire were relatively small and were dealt with in a short period of time. The third fire was dispatched as approximately 5m by 5m. Prior to arrival the first arriving officer observed the fire to be approximately 30m by 100m and immediately requested additional resources, including mutual aid from Christina Lake, and the RCMP.

The fire was spreading in all directions, but was not close to any structures. Crews were able to action the fire and contain it within a couple of hours. Total fire size is estimated at 70m by 120m.

Due to the number of fires, their proximity and timing, the circumstances are considered suspicious. The RCMP and BC Wildfire Service have both been notified and are aware of the incidents.

Anyone who was in the area during that time and observed unusual activity, people or vehicles—or who may have relevant security or dash-camera footage—is asked to contact the Grand Forks RCMP.
Please avoid speculation or identifying individuals on social media. If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.

BC Wildfire Crews attended this morning with a GFFR crew to complete mop-up and ensure the fire is out.

The fire is currently under investigation by GFFR, BC Wildfire Service, and the RCMP.

GFFR would like to once again thank our mutual aid partners, and the RCMP for assisting with this incident.

đźš’ AN HONEST UPDATE ON FIREFIGHTER RECRUITMENT

We want to be open with our community about one of the challenges currently facing Grand Forks Fire/Rescue.

Our last two paid-on-call recruitment campaigns have attracted fewer candidates than we had hoped. During our spring campaign, we received five applications and hired two firefighters. Both have since stepped away for personal reasons, which we fully respect. In our current recruitment round, we have received two applications.

We are slightly below the staffing level we would like to maintain. Our community continues to be served by an excellent group of firefighters who consistently step up when called. However, we also need enough depth to prepare for normal attrition, develop future leaders, and ensure our current members can take a well-earned break without the same people continually carrying the load.

Recruiting a firefighter is not simply about adding a name to the roster. Finding the right people, completing the required training, and developing the experience needed to serve safely and effectively all take time. That is why we must think ahead and plan for the future now.

This is not meant to cause concern. It is simply an honest look at where we are and what we need to remain strong and sustainable in the years ahead.

If you have ever considered becoming a paid-on-call firefighter and serving your community, we would be happy to speak with you. It is a significant commitment—but also an incredibly rewarding opportunity to become part of an exceptional team.
