DRIVING IN THE HAZE: Do you know what to do?
We’ve all stepped outside to a morning blanket of heavy fog or thick haze. It looks peaceful, but behind the wheel? It’s a different story.
Reduced visibility is a leading cause of multi-car pileups. Since we can’t control the weather, we have to control our habits!
Before you head out into the grey, make sure you're practicing these 5 crucial safety rules from our expert instructors:
1. 🚫 Ditch the High Beams (Seriously!)
Your instinct might be to blast your high beams to "cut through" the gloom. Don't! High beams reflect off the tiny water droplets and smoke particles in the air, bouncing the light straight back into your eyes and blinding you.
👉 What to do: Stick to low beams or use your fog lights. They point down at the pavement where you need them most.
2. ⏱️ Master the "5-Second Rule"
Normally, we teach our students a 2-to-3-second following distance. In hazy weather, double it! Haze tricks your eyes, making the car ahead look much further away than it actually is.
👉 What to do: Keep a 5-to-6 second gap so you have plenty of time to react if they slam on their brakes.
3. 🌬️ Defog Like a Pro
Haze outside means high moisture levels, which leads to foggy windows on the inside.
👉 What to do: Before you shift into Drive, turn on your front and rear defrosters AND run your air conditioning (even if it's cool out). The AC acts as a dehumidifier to clear your glass instantly!
4. ❌ Skip the Cruise Control
Cruise control is great for sunny road trips, but dangerous in low-visibility or slick conditions.
👉 What to do: Keep cruise control off. Hazy weather demands 100% active engagement so you can react to sudden obstacles in a split second.
5. 🛑 The Pull-Over Pivot
If the haze is so thick that you can’t see more than a couple of car lengths ahead, it’s time to get off the road. But how you do it matters:
1️⃣ Signal early and pull completely off the road into a safe parking lot or wide shoulder.
2️⃣ Turn on your hazard lights so others know you've stopped.
3️⃣ Turn off your main headlights. (If you leave them on, drivers behind you might think you’re still moving, follow your lights, and accidentally rear-end you!)
> 💡 The Golden Rule: If you can't see, don't drive. Your destination can wait; your safety cannot.

How to Choose the Right Driving School in Hamilton (2026 Guide)
Learning to drive is a big milestone and picking the right driving school can make the difference between feeling anxious behind the wheel and feeling confident enough to pass your road test on the first try. If you’re searching for a driving school in Hamilton, here’s what to look for before you register.
1. Make Sure the School Is MTO-Approved
Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO) sets strict standards for Beginner Driver Education (BDE) programs. Choosing an MTO-approved driving school matters because it can:
Qualify you for insurance discounts
Reduce the waiting time between your G1, G2, and G licence stages
Guarantee your instructors meet provincial training and safety standards
CS Driving School is fully MTO-approved, so every hour you spend learning counts toward these benefits.
2. Look for Local, Experienced Instructors
A driving school that knows Hamilton’s roads is worth far more than a generic program. Local instructors understand:
Hamilton’s traffic patterns and busiest intersections
Common G2 and G road test routes
Local hazards like hills, mountain-access roads, and downtown congestion
Our instructors are patient, certified, and trained specifically around Hamilton and Burlington driving conditions so you’re not learning in a bubble, you’re learning where you’ll actually be tested.
3. Check the Pass Rate
A school’s track record speaks volumes. CS Driving School maintains a 97% passing ratio, built on nearly seven years of teaching new drivers in Halton and Hamilton. Before you commit to any school, ask about their pass rate — it’s one of the clearest signs of teaching quality.
4. Flexible Scheduling Matters
Between school, work, and family commitments, rigid lesson times can make learning to drive harder than it needs to be. Look for a school offering:
Evening and weekend lesson availability
Options to make up missed classes
Virtual classroom sessions alongside in-car training
5. One-on-One, Personalized Training
Every student learns differently. The best driving schools tailor lessons to your comfort level and experience — whether you’re a nervous first-timer or brushing up before your G road test — rather than using a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

CS Driving School has helped new drivers across Hamilton and Burlington build real skills and pass their road tests for seven years running. Our MTO-approved packages include in-car lessons, G2 and G test prep, and flexible virtual classroom options.

# Cottage Country Driving: Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
Ontario's cottage season is one of the most anticipated times of the year. Whether you're heading to Muskoka, Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton, or Georgian Bay, driving to cottage country can be a relaxing experience when done safely and responsibly.
# # Prepare Before You Leave
Before starting your trip, inspect your vehicle. Check your tires, brakes, lights, windshield wipers, and fluid levels. Make sure you have enough fuel, especially if you're traveling to remote areas where gas stations may be limited.
# # Plan Your Route
Traffic heading to cottage country can become heavy, especially on long weekends. Use a GPS or navigation app to monitor traffic conditions and identify alternative routes if necessary. Leaving early in the morning or later in the evening can help avoid peak traffic times.
# # Stay Alert on Rural Roads
Many cottage roads are narrow, winding, and may have limited lighting. Reduce your speed and stay focused on the road. Watch for wildlife such as deer, especially during dawn and dusk when animal activity is highest.
# # Share the Road
Rural areas often have cyclists, pedestrians, farm equipment, and recreational vehicles. Maintain a safe following distance and be patient when passing slower-moving traffic.
# # Drive According to Weather Conditions
Weather can change quickly in cottage country. Rain, fog, and even sudden storms can reduce visibility. Slow down, turn on your headlights when needed, and increase your following distance.
# # Avoid Distracted Driving
Keep your attention on the road. Set your GPS before leaving, avoid texting, and limit distractions inside the vehicle. A moment of distraction can lead to serious consequences.
# # Enjoy the Journey
The drive to the cottage is part of the experience. Take breaks when needed, stay hydrated, and enjoy Ontario's beautiful scenery. Safe driving helps ensure that you and your family arrive relaxed and ready to enjoy your time away.
# # # Final Thoughts
Cottage country offers some of Ontario's most beautiful destinations, but it also presents unique driving challenges. By planning ahead, staying alert, and following safe driving practices, you can make your trip enjoyable and stress-free.
