Cuts & scrapes. Wash your hands; wear gloves if you can. Apply pressure to stop minor bleeding. Rinse the wound with clean running water. Cover with a clean, sterile dressing or bandage.

Panic or emergency?. When unsure, treat the more serious possibility. Stay calm; your steadiness reassures them. Keep watching breathing, colour and alertness. Worsening or in doubt, call 9-1-1.

Allergic reactions. Mild: rash, hives, itching, sneezing, watery eyes. Watch closely, mild can turn severe fast. Help with prescribed antihistamines if they have them. Any breathing/swelling signs? Treat as anaphylaxis.

Hyper- ventilation. Fast, deep breathing, often from stress or panic. May feel dizzy, tingly, or short of breath. Reassure them and encourage slow, calm breaths. If it doesn't settle, or cause is unclear, call 9-1-1.

Asthma attack: stay calm. Help them sit upright and stay calm. Help them use their own reliever (blue) inhaler. A spacer makes the medicine work better. No improvement or worsening? Call 9-1-1.

Trouble breathing: the signs. Fast, slow, shallow or noisy breathing. Gasping, wheezing, or gulping for air. Skin looking pale, blue or grey. Anxiety, dizziness, or unable to speak in sentences.

Tourniquet: the last resort. For life-threatening limb bleeding pressure can't stop. Place 5-8 cm above the wound (not on a joint). Tighten until the bleeding stops; note the time. Do not loosen it, leave that to EMS.

Stop the bleed: press hard. Call 9-1-1 for severe or spurting bleeding. Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth. Keep pressing, add layers, don't remove soaked ones. Have the person lie down; watch for shock.
