HOT TAKE 🔥 most “beginner” sewing patterns ARE NOT ACTUALLY beginner friendly. 🧵

The pattern industry is flooded with “beginner” labels — because beginners are the biggest audience, and the biggest audience means the most sales. Makes sense from a marketing angle. But it means a lot of new sewers are picking up patterns that say “easy” on the cover and then hitting techniques, terminology, or finishing steps that leave them frustrated (and sometimes ready to give up before they even get started).

That’s not the experience we want for our beginners at Main Fabric.

So we’re starting a new series: we’re picking up newly released “beginner” patterns and giving them an honest assessment — are they actually beginner friendly, or just labeled that way?

“Can boys join our sewing workshops?”

YES!! 100%. We teach all genders, and honestly — everyone should learn to sew. Our projects are super diverse, so there’s something for every interest. We would be SO excited to have you join us!

“Will there be other boys there?”

If your child is worried about being the only boy in the room, we’d encourage signing up for our Monday afternoon session — that’s where we’re seeing the most boy participation! But just to be clear: your child is welcome to join any day of the week. 💛

This is a space built on inclusivity, creativity, and community — no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from, there is a seat at our table for YOU. Sewing has no gender, no rules, and no limits — just come as you are and create something amazing. ✨
